  1. Super tubes is the easiest trail at conties.
  2. I'm considering a walking workout for Ouberg ... But ja, it's a long slow steady state ... Last long ride complete today, 11 hours and Garmin says my potential is at 69 percent after that... Which is good for confidence
  3. 3 weeks to munga grit Tankwa .... Is it too late to polarise and periodise ...?
  4. This media as well as several first hand accounts strongly suggest that the statement referring to the lack of water on the mountain as "misinformation" is a actually a lie. An investigative journalist might make a name for him/herself here.
  5. I would have thought that that strong saddle tilt would transfer weight onto your hands on long rides - but if it's comfy for you then it's comfy for you. My saddle tilt adjustments usually end with me totally screwing up my position and going back to the bike fitter for a reset. He calls me a "micro-adjuster".
  6. El cheapo Nutrition for long training rides Home made maltodextrin and fructose gel and drink mix Baby potatoes boiled in a bucket of saltwater and carried in a ziplock in top tube bag Peanutbutter sandwich in another ziploc bag Dates in another ziploc bag Only coffee when you get to the coffee shop in hopefield or moreesburg or Riebeek kasteel or whichever far flung place you get to. vs The "luxury money is no object" long ride nutrition Amacx gels, turbo gummis and fast bars from Gear Change Hammer Perpetuem from hammer nutriton coza (3 hour bottle with 9 scoops) Toasted sarmie and carrot cake with cappuccino at pit stop Or some compromise between the two cos I'm so middle class
  7. If you place a spirit level or a spirit level app on your phone on the saddle on the flattest part of the nose of the saddle, what is the angle?
  8. An indoor trainer with a dedicated elcheapo/broken frame (de peche mode reference) and groupset is a big money and time saver I have found - zero wear on chain, cassette, derailleur and brakes obviously and if you don't care about the frame and headset then all is good. Saves damaging race equipment. Weekends are for longer outdoor sessions and skills riding with the concommitant wear and tear on equipment. There's no getting away from it though - riding and prepping for ultras and multidays is incredibly expensive.
  9. MAybe post a picture of the saddle in it's maxed out nose down position?
  10. thats a big ride. You'll be 36one ready if you can do that
  11. I NEED a drink
  12. JA - those two spikes at the end are what I've heard people refer to as "rollers" and which other people have said, usually while toiling on them "die is nie v#kken rollers". The year when it was so muddy I walked the steepest sections and overtook people who were trying to ride them.
  13. That sums me up in a paragraph
  14. Ride to Tokai, ride up to the mast or up to lookout point above Silvermine. Trails back down for some fun ....
  15. Lake really is the go to for wide feet - apparently Bontrager are soon to follow suit -
  16. Eenzaamheid
  17. Agreed ja. They should interview @DieselnDuston the finish line.
  18. I really hope that if there are people in hospital fighting for their lives that they pull through. I'm surprised by the vitriolic tone of some of the discussions about the unceertainty and rumours of deaths. If however, there is spin put on any tragedy that might have played out in Paarl it will be the worst display of corporate @sscovering I've ever seen. There is something very paradoxical to me about a corporate entity organising a mountin bike ride - then I remind myself that the entry fee is what it is. The munga race documents basically say, I'm paraphrasing "What you've signed up for is a very dangerous thing. It's an extreme event, in extreme conditions, often hundreds of kilometres away from the nearest hospital and while there is ambulance support, you are likely to spend a lot of time alone in a dangerous environment. You may die. We'll try and make sure that doesn't happen but no guarantees." It's honest. Evasion of responsibility is built into the corporate model - it's a legal individual comprised of many individuals all of whom abdicate their personal responsibility and invest it in the collective. Is part of what you pay for with your 120k the right to make someone else responsible for your safety, and to what extent is that legally enforcable? And morally?
  19. Ja I'd agree with that - the munga comparison isn't really valid as riding on those trails is a completely different kind of effort - it's one thing to keep ticking the engine over at low intensity for long periods in 40 plus conditions in the karoo - quite another to be doing the repeated 3 to 5 second big watt efforts it requires to ride up a steep switchback climb or get through a tricky technical section with. momentum in the same temperatures. The latter far more dangerous. I hope that noone has been seriously hurt by the heat.
  20. Absolutely brutal - it sounds staggeringly difficult. Well done on keeping your sense of humour. The video of the elites racing through the dust and loose dirt looked hard enough - can't even imagine what it was like after all of those wheels through there.
  21. Tread media reports that organisers say there were no rider fatalities.
  22. To be fair ... That missing link climb is pretty horrible ... And sometimes has those big humps on it that just hurt so much
  23. Much cleaner than bottles imo. And easier to drink from. The bite valves just open to slight pressure from teeth. Long term, mould is an issue which I deal with by soaking in Milton sterrinappy at regular intervals and keeping in freezer when not in use.
  24. Circulating on whatsapp groups !URGENT! We are implementing a STAGE CANCELLATION AT WATER POINT 3 due to the extreme heat and will be assisting riders being removed from the route. Riders on route already through Water Point 3 can continue to finish. Riders between Water Point 2 to Water Point 3 will be removed from route – vehicles are being deployed to accessible points on the route to evacuate riders. If you are able to assist with transporting riders from route to race village, please report at the VOC (behind Race Hospital) and we will deploy you. Please do not make any statements to press or media.
  25. Early entries for 895 open at midnight tonight ... here we go again
