  1. Hacc, I'm also on a Zwift program. And then came Scott week and I did Nino's VO2max session tonight. If you (or anybody else) was wondering how long 5 min's can become, try it while it is available. But basically: 5 min at 90 cadence and 125% FTP, 3 min rest... repeat... repeat... reepeeeat... reeeepeeeeeat...
  2. I'm sitting wondering the same thing about SeweweeksPoort. Contactless sport or not... And I've already made up my mind that even if Cape Town does (somehow) NOT get cancelled, there's a snowman's hope that I'll take a sachet from somebody's hand as early as October.
  3. Beware the "toe dipping into running" - that's how I started. Just to stay fit during winter for W2W with a partner that can cycle to work during winter. And it's never too late - I was... about 44 at that stage. I'm now swinging back into cycling a bit and enjoying both MTB and trail running immensely.
  4. From what I understand running on Zwift is much like ERG mode when you do training program. They have no terrain effect, simply pace on the treadmill. Unless, of course the higher end treadmills can can cater for that. So that guy can merrily klap his top speed on the treadmill as if he was running on a flat while you're coughing up a lung on that cobbled climbs. That's the way I understand it (please correct me if I'm wrong) and why I'll not invest in getting running on Zwift. Will much rather spend the time indoors constructively on the bike than on a dreadmill with not much else than pictures in front of me.
  5. Pit stops was a free for for all till... was it not also after the black weekend at Imola 94 when a wheel came off under acceleration whilst still inside the pits? Until then, you had to be wakey and duck if you were in the pits - and the stops definitely did not remain at 16 seconds. We can thank a South African for that!
  6. For anything longer than a half, comfort over "race shoe" wins for me. Not that I run a lot of road (comparatively) nowadays.
  7. Paarl mountain, just a hill in comparison to some of the stuff you run! We do have access to some of the mountain before we hit the reserve areas. On Friday we weren't quite so aware of the reserve being closed so did sortof venture into there slightly...
  8. Made the mistake of hitting the mountain as soon as I could. I can walk properly today again. Even yesterday I was going down the stairs like somebody that did a marathon! Strange how we get used to what we can do... and then 5 weeks pass. Despite still being fit, trail running is a different animal.
  9. I agree with what most have said regarding change of brand. Why change if you're happy? Secondly - it's a very personal thing. Many many runners love Brooks. It just does not work for me. I love Saucony, also Altra. New Balance is next in line. (I tend to get them for the daily accumlative mileage runs which kills shoes, since I can pick them up on special more often...)
  10. Yes, definitely. I am not on a paid version. Set privacy zone since day 1. Was amazed to see that people have not set it, when seeing all these around-the-house runs.
  11. Fortunately my wife and daughter has a treadmill and I have a new trainer. Ready fir lockdown, ready for winter, ready for structured training (now there's a first for me!) on the trainer.
  12. Off topic, but you're talking about busy vs not busy... I noticed a lot more people in the mountain both days, yes. But then Sunday afternoon my wife wanted to go for a quick Sunday drive. Not getting out, just a drive. As it happens we drove past some of the local VERY popular wine farms. We even drove in at one, because we could not believe what we were seeing. Never ever saw either of those places so quiet. Places where you have to book weeks in advance stood empty. If we wanted, we could walk in and order a pizza. But... better a bit of economy struggles than struggling with the effects of this virus and overloaded hospitals.
  13. Well onto some good news! For the first time since all the niggles, I was back in the mountain yesterday! Holy cow, one quickly falls out of running uphill... Did the mind a LOT of good just be out there on foot again. Painful and painfully slow, but I was there. But the mountain is in horrible shape after the fire this week. It will heal, at least! Legs are really feeling it today. I am officially a softie!
  14. Call me stupid, but it's not as if you can seriously expect a refund... You've entered with the T&C's known. What's the odds of it being cancelled anyways. It is a huge show to get on the road, and as was rightly said, loads of expenses have already been incurred. And really, it's not as if anybody from numerous other cancelled events will get refunded. I mean, compared to Epic entry fee or flights for a MotoGP or F1 race that will not happen... None of us got refunded for 2017 Argus, so why should anybody think this should be different? At least you're not in the starting pens when the cancellation happens!
  15. Daft question... but... is anybody actually still going to gym? And how will the current status affect (or be reflected) ito the VA gym membership benefits? Or does one simply have to go and maintain the 36, even if just swiping and walking out?
  16. I had such a laugh now - just have to share. For various reasons I had to go and fetch my daughter today, take her to some appointments, etc. We sit chatting about this virus and I ask her - so how's it affecting you guys at school. Other than extended holidays, of course. (Background - she's in an all-girls school...) So she says... well, apparently we now have to catch up work via Google classroom - that's just not holiday! I really cannot fault her logic there. And then being the positive one she is continues into... So we know and have been told the hug thing is a bit of a no-no. So now most of them do the "elbow pump". And then... (That's my girl!) she and her buddy worked out this really freaking cool "foot shake"! As a greeting, she even taught me it. Unreal - they just don't let anything phase them and find a solution! Ja well, it's a bit off the running topic. So I called Oceans right, who knows what may happen in the time to Comrades. I honestly told my wife on Friday evening - I'm not running Oceans. There's just no way I can take a sachet and pop it into my mouth not knowing where it's been. (I know I'll get slayed for not carrying my own) And I think the moral of the story is - we must be like the kids. They simply roll with the punches. There are some thing money can't replace. I am fortunate to have a beaut of a mountain in my back yard. I expect to use it extensively over the coming few months, both running and riding. We may not have a next target race. So what?! Be ready for one when it comes along. Stay healthy, stay safe, stay active.
  17. Bold section was not part of the official statement. So expect it was just bad reporting.
  18. At the rate at which sporting events are being cancelled and postponed, I am honestly not even optimistic for Oceans. Comrades is still a bit down the line, so things may have panned out a bit, one way or the other, by then.
  19. Congrats Andrew! Hope it's a great one!
  20. When I am fully healed, and can run enough again, I also do the vest with soft flask thing - and like Dave we spend most of our runs off the tar.
  21. All the best Andrew! Getting answers and moving forward is a big thing.
  22. Aggenee! But I may be staring down the same barrel for Oceans. After 60k's of running entire Feb (I'm lying... 61!) I'm off to a new bio this afternoon. Even if the news is good ito recovery, that's just way too little time on the legs. General fitness is fine due to some MTB, but for Oceans you need that time on the legs as well. Mentally not in a good space.
  23. And that's justabout the only info they actually give.
  24. Have run in Altra, both the Instinct and the Superior. Loved the Instinct, ran them to smithereens, but did not like the Superior all that much - too loose at the heel and the tread wore down really quickly. But agreed, they are hands-down the most comfortable shoes out there.
  25. Meeeee!!! I love them, but it's a very personal thing. I use (for trail) the Peregrine range, have since the P 5. They are not too heavy, nice grip and esp the later versions works well on rock as well. (The 5's had agro tread but was slippery as anything on the smooth granite-type rock - was fine on more "rough" rocks.) Note that there's a 4mm drop on these - most people are used to more. I had one - the first one where they had the more knit-type upper - where the upper itself did not last all that well. But I'm still running in it... Forefoot is nice and wide enough and rear has a comfortable tight fit - not sloppy and not Achilles-hindering. Don't know what more you want to know? But like I said, it's very personal. It will take some convincing to get me to run in any other trail shoe. (Except maybe Altra, but they're too hard to find!)
