I think that you still need to report it, Pressure will build up on the cops to patrol.

My concern is that these thugs broke the bottom 2 vibrecrate slabs in that painted wall, and they use that to escape

Next time you pass there, check at one point, almost hidden behind the low busghes, they got a hole in the wall.

Flip it!!! Last year a guy got mugged off his bike past there (2 of them riding) just minutes after I went past (alone). They stuck a pole in his back wheel.

As I read your post my adrenalin started pumping just at the thought of getting mugged. I was considering a BB gun (co² powered) to carry along with me. Strap it to my stem in a pouch for easy access.

I think a lot of these guys are opportunists and are not from the area, so they take a chance because they heard another of their buddy's got it right at some point.

LL - must agree - in spite of the schlep, you have to report this incident... It's only when SAPS are 'aware' of how many incidents there have been, that the right sort of political noises can be made!

what can we do? well not buying stolen bicycles is something we can all help with.

I come from the cape flats where things are pretty tough. Through out my youth we learned how to counter such instances. This is why we have a violent society. When we used to ride bikes, we use to carry baseball bats, metal rods etc. I know what you are talking about with these 2 guys, came across that kinda situation enough times. I now carry a tazer as well as a retractable metal security baton. in the old days you should have seen the look on these guys faces when you pulled out a baton of soughts as you ride up to them. A buddy of mine had one with nails in it inspired by mad max. It is unfortunate, but this is part of south africa, it is a k@k mentallity, but what can we do as idividuals, we need thousands before we are heard and millions under the counter for action

i'm sure you've got a lot of stories! We could learn a lot from you.

where do you mount your tazer? do you spark it to show the guys you mean business before contact happens?

You can also report it to your local CPF if you have no faith in your/the cop shop.

When my house got burgled a few years back I reported it even though I had no insurance and the it was only R3K worth of goods. The cops where honest about the chances of catching the guy but they did say that reporting crimes is important in assisting them with allocating limited resources.

i'm not one for blogging on such a serious issue - I've gotten hold of the councellor whose portfolio is safety and security and he wasn't aware of these problems.

Please can all of you who have been victims forward me date, time, case number and a brief description of what happened (if you haven't reported it yet, please do so) and I will forward it through to Mr Thorpe.

[Mod's note: Thanks for the initiative MTBM  !! But rather ask those who want to, to PM you for your email address... Bit risky displaying it in the public forum... all sorts of 'bots' and spammers can pick it up here!]

If this is true then it's absolutely shocking... not a week goes by on that road without an incident. He is probably lying or have no clue of what's going on in his own area.

The only other route we take to Stellenbosch is going directly over Bottelary to the R44, but in the middle you also get the train tracks where you have to slow down quite a bit making you a target - but nothing has happened there before.

The other thing is that the attacks happens from both Kyamandi and Cloetesville. They can get away to quickly into those areas for anybody to do anything. Once we were riding into Stellenbosch and one guy next to the road smashed a pole into my friends back wheel and his buddy pulled a gun, but when cars stopped they just ran across the field to Cloetesville and actually stopped on the wall and watched what was going on because nobody could get to them... not even the private security company that also came to help.

Crazy :o

WOW!! Damn I always cycle past there alone...even on some weekends. So basically what should I do? I got taught to protect myself, but then again now I might assault him and get charged...so what do you do in this situation?

Should I cycle with a sword, so if the guy come closer I pull it out and push it through him like in the Gladiator movie....

I wish that place could burn down!!

Whilst I share your sentiments and frustration, as aimed at the culprits - the simple truth is that Kayamandi is also home to thousands of hard-working, honest and innocent men, women and children - young and old...

So I for one would not like to see Kayamandi burn down. :o

Everyone has a right to live, we work hard for our things....and those selected few come ruien it for us....and since it happens at Kayamandi they make them all look bad....

I said this last week as well, when I was called ignorant and there is basically 4 option:

1. Continue riding on your own, be aware and doe what LL did (clad you are ok)

2. Only ride past there in big groups, not on your own

3. When riding past in big groups, sort the suspects out once and for all (but that is starting a revolution, and who wants to do that)

4. Everybody avoid the area completely

It would be great howeever if the local councellor can do something about it.
