Buying a motorcycle is a good idea. I spend R240 - R300 a month on petrol :) but its risky business

I was also concerned about the risk involved before getting a bike last year Nov and I now realized that I wasted a lot of money by not doing it years ago . I have found it to be no more risky than farting around in the truck but at a fraction of the cost . My R3K monthly fuel bill almost disappeared and the time saved over the last few months must amount to about 3000km on a bike .

Once my bantam is paid off (June this year), that is my next move  But I want something dual purpose - love the dirt - just not cycling in it - prefer roads to cycle.

After considering the cost of cycling to work, I did some minor adjustments. Firstly the number of gears were reduced to ONE, and the frame beacme STEEL.

Obviously the race bikes survived, but now I have a purpose for all its upgrades, to keep the SS commute in tip top condition.

My concern is always for the newbie motorcyclists. They are firstly a danger to themselves, their fellow motorcyclists and finally the greater motoring community. These newbies seem to have large attitudes, no fear of death or injury and have little regard to the community at large. It usually requires an accident of some sort to sort out the above mentioned issues the only problem being sometimes these accidents are fatal or have other nasty consequences. This probably applies to newbie cyclists as well :)so do take care ...

I am over the moon that I willbe paying Eishkom another 25% more. Our electric bills average around R1300 per month, usage is only about R300-400 per month, the rest of the dosh goes on their rental!

Time to put a prepaid unit @ home i think!!

What we pay Eskom - doesnt reflect our actualy usage!

They just fitted the entire complex with new metres...

Yeah, the fuel increases will hurt a lot of folk who have to travel long distances to and from work, I think the government could have delayed the Road Accident fund levy kicking in tomorrow, the fund has been maladministered, corrupt and officially bankrupt for so long now a few more months would have made no differance, but would have been a good gesture to financially strapped S.Africans.

...I just read that economists are saying the government is setting policies that allows SARS to collect taxes earlier and earlier which is unsustainable, the immediately payable provisional tax, and the "pay now argue later" on tax queries is just a few examples - see below from News 24.

Experts expect that the SA Revenue Service, which is under pressure to meet its revenue target, may enforce stricter measures.

Ernest Mazansky, tax director at legal firm Werksmans, said a problem that has been building up for a few years is that the tax office has been collecting its taxes earlier and earlier. One day the flow will dry up, he said, and there will be “no more juice to squeeze out of the lemon”. The country will then sit with a massive deficit.

Mazansky says one of the ways in which taxes are being collected earlier is with the second provisional tax payment.

This payment (which now has to be made by the end of March) has to be 90% exact or penalties and interest will be levied on the outstanding amount.

Mazansky said he could see a situation unfolding in which payments on a revised assessment had to be made immediately.

In the past a taxpayer had at least 30 days to pay. These days they have to pay “right now”.
