Hi guys. I am looking to buy a cheap entry level bike. I have found 2 bikes that I am considering:

The 1st is Raleigh Durango Platinum with Deore cranks/derailers and shifters. Its 5 years old but hardly used.

The 2nd is a Silverback Reno 2009 and is as stock as they come. I think its good a complete Alivio setup, if that makes any sense.

Both bikes are priced similarly. Which one should I look at first and why?

I don't know much about the Raleigh and a google search brings up nothing but old classified adverts. From the pictures, the fork looks a bit 'outdated'. Had anyone had experience with the Durango in its stock form?

Thanks in advance

My advice would be to look at the Silverback first. Technology has come a long way in five years, so the Reno parts are definitely less abused than the Raleigh and the parts may be better spec'd, especially the fork.

At the end of the day they there should be little difference in the actual frames.

Thanks a lot for that info but how about the gears - Deore vs Alivio?

Learn rather how to service and maintain those gears. I got Alivio (2yrs now) and I've got no intention of upgrading at the moment as I service my bike when ever it needs attention.

There is more to good shifting on your bike than just the derailleur.

On paper the Deore's should be better than the Alivio, but as pointed out at this level the difference should be minimal. They'll both be very sturdy and rugged shifters.

I have a lot of friends that bought the Reno's in 2008/09 to start out. Most of them still have them and pass them out for races and rides when someone wants to try a MTB. They take a punishment and cheap to sort if something does go wrong but I haven't heard any complaints !

I had an entry level Raleigh (Still do in the garage - will never get rid of it). I took it overseas for commuting/training and it did more mileage than my car in the two years there so it is also a good option but that was mine and I looked after it.

I personally would suggest the Reno as I've seen five or six of them all bought at roughly the same time and last a lot of abuse (even when some not so well looked after !)

I took a look at the Raleigh earlier and it didn't have the Deore components that it was advertised with.

The guys simply used the specs from an advert that someone else posted as he didn't know much about the bike.

It seems that I may be able to take a look at the Silverback tomorrow.

Thank very much.

How much are you paying for the bike? The Reno is still V-Brake and its not worth upgrading to Disc

The earlier Raleigh Durangos had rather heavy steal frames and when they went aluminium, had even cheaper frames. Either you are being over charged for the Raleigh or you are getting the Silverback at a bargain. The Raleigh should be far cheaper. I also doubt that both bikes will have full Alivio parts, probably only the rear derailures. I would go Silverback.

Thanks guys, Yes Eugene, there were errors on both adverts.

I ended up buying this a GT Avalanche 1.0 with Deore components from the For Sale section. Awesome bike.

Appreciate the help ;)
