When comparing prices on a couple of items I'm interested in (Look Quartz pedals, maybe an Assos bib if I can dodge customs...), I found that Evans Cycles are cheaper and has free shipping SA on just about everything (think you need to spend about R500).

They also guarantee to be beat any price.

I've been to the shop in London, but have never bought anything from them online.

My question is why is everyone always raving about CRC, when these guys offer better deals?

Shop around, it varies. They used to be the cheapest, but others have responded. And often stock problems. I recently got some SRAM and Shimano mtb bits for bikeinn in Spain (good prices) and Hope X4 Limited Edition brakeset from UkBikestore (better prices on Hope products and CRC never has stock) but also a shipment of some bits (Raceface crankset) from CRC just for old times sake.

Just had a look at Bikeinn.com. Very good prices, but their shipping is ridiculous. They are about R60 cheaper, but charge R341 to ship it to the ZAR...

Evans ship most things by UPS, so you're immediately forced to pay and extra R100 for clearance fees vs. a Parcel Force order. On the other hand, it does arrive a day or two quicker.

In my experience, the order checking/stock control that Evans does it not up to scratch. I've placed about four orders with them. On two of those orders they've sent the wrong item. The first time they sorted it out quickly and sent the correct item. My latest order has been a nightmare trying to get my part replaced or refunded (after I shipped it back to them at my cost). Hopefully it will be resolved soon, though it is now two months since I placed the original order.

Shop Around, Free market there on the 'ol Interweb.

CRC is a bit more, but free shipping brings them in line 9/10.

Road, Total is still the best!

So R100 flat fee regardless of the value of the package - did not know that! Also I assume its a given that Customs will have a look at these? I've brought in a couple of things from China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, and it seems to be luck of the draw on whether you pay customs or not.

If it comes in through UPS, it's pretty much guaranteed that customs will look at it and likely charge the correct duties too. After which UPS slaps on their own R100 clearing fee.
