I'm looking to get away for some lone single-track exploration and hear Mankele is a great place for it.

I'm going in June so it will be chilly, but is there anything I should look out for whilst there? I'll be on my own so any recommended trails would be great.

I'm also camping there whilst riding, are the facilities decent?

Hey P,

We stayed there for 2 days over the Christmas period, and I highly recommend it. We stayed in the log cabins (which were superb). I can't comment on the camping facilities, but if they were anything like the cabins, they'll be great!

The riding is also very good; I did the 35km route, and the single track and technical aspects are superb (especially slippery when it rains!). Well marked too! The trails office has a nicely produced map, and in general a very well-run, professional park. While you're there take a trip to Sudwala caves.

I don't think you'll regret it.

Thanks for the heads up. I am looking forwards to it already. The prices are really good too considering its R60 for a nights camping and that includes the entry to the mountain bike park...maybe i should move closer.

Mankele is absolutely brilliant!

I went there with 3 buddies in Dec 2010 and we had a blast. There are a couple of routes with varying distances. The map at reception is great. The camping is very good as well. There aren't allot of trees so when its hot, you will need something decent to provide shading. There is a leka swimming pool, but the best of all is the trails. Form bush tunnels to tech singletrack and lung bursting climbs. Just a heads up - when heading out to the longer trails, take it easy over the first 4.5km. The climb is brutal but from there is whoop whoop!

You are going to have a jol!

Pack lights and do a night ride on the 20k loop - Make sure you have something to strap your smile down. Mankele is super cool!

Probably the only draw back is that you don't have to many shopping facilities around - so make sure you pack all you need for the weekend ito snacks, drinks and food

We also went over xmass/new year. The camping facilities are great. Its prob better that its cool, because down there it is pretty hot and humid. Nice pool (swimming and the kind with the stick and balls) facilities, and tubing down the river is fun too.

Don't forget to pack a spare set of lungs for the climb, and your mountain bike skills. Its not a "district roads" kind of ride... and thats why its awesome

As an aside, if you are there on the first week end of the month, go take the long tour of the sudwala caves, to the crystal chamber. That was awesome too. You have to pre book

go to www.mankele.co.za this is the real deal, set up by mountain bikers FOR mountain bikers, not some ex holiday resort trying to cash in on our sport, "The best place to mountain bike in SA" so said some dude called Burry, I think he won the Cape Septic or something?
