Bottelary Hills MTB Trails

Hellwarp

Recommended Posts

Hi, i am new to the forum but not to Bottelary hills. I normaly ride from the Hazendal entrance and do green route most of the time. I have done red a couple times. I just want to find out if there is a part of BH with some jumps in the ST? I see there is a lot of maintanance being done lately. Thanks to all working on the trail. Cheers, Rhudi

No jumps, no drop-offs, no technical sections - just loads of flowing single track.  Go and ride the yellow route next time  - I think you will like it.

TRAIL NOTICE: We have opened up a new 1km piece of trail which forms part of Ribbok single track (see white line on the map below). Opening was delayed due to the track being dry and loose in places, hoping it will compact nicely after this week's rain. We'll monitor the wear on the tread, should it get too powdery we will close it again and wait for more rain. We aim to have signage up by the weekend.

Went down the Ribbok ST today and encountered these trees.  The first one is touch and go as to whether I could duck under it.  didn't take the chance. This is on the "original" ST

The second one is about handle bar height, so definitely wouldn't have made it. On the extended white bit that was added recently. post-96642-0-60889100-1475179925_thumb.jpg

Besides those, I enjoyed the added bit.

We are aware of the first one - is on the maintenance schedule for the coming week - we were doing maintenance on the yellow route this week.

Re the second one - there are lots of those around that keep falling over from time to time - they are like pick-up sticks - quite easy to pick up and move.  I hope you have removed It from the trail to make it save for riders that will ride down there after you?

I tried to move it, but couldn't and...  there were other trees laying on top of that one (to the left, out of view) and it seemed like a game of jenga.  didn't want more to slide down onto the trail/me/my bike.

No problem - will ride up to there tomorrow morning and sort it out.

  • 3 weeks later...

The STBB race this weekend was great! I assisted as a sweeper / roving mechanic on the 30km route, and it was clear that a lot of work goes into the trails.

I am thinking of adding Bottelary to list of places to do a quick evening ride. How busy are the trails (i.e. is it safe). The thinking is to hit the trails at around 5:30pm and be done by 7pm in the summer months.

I will also need to look at the best places to start / finish from as I work close to Tyger Valley. The TBMTB trails are nice and all, but I enjoyed the ride so much this weekend, that if I had to chose between TBMTB and Bottelary, it will have to  be Bottelary.

If you start your ride at the Hazendal entrance to the trails you can easily do the medium green or "normal" green loop in 1½ hours.   Medium green includes the Ribbok single track in the forest that you had done on Saturday as part of the 30 km route.

There are another three sections of really stunning single track (5 km in total) on the green route (Rooikat, Geelslang and Mongoose).

There are a number of riders that do after work rides in summer - trails are very safe.  There is  safe parking at Hazendal - just tell the guard at the gate what time you will be back so that he is aware that it is your car that is still in the parking lot (Hazendal closes at 5 pm).

You can buy a day permit at Engen at Soneike shopping centre. If you are going to ride often, then an annual permit will be a better option.  Annual permits for 2017 will be on sale the last week in November.

Hazendal like dirtman said, but you can also add Zevenwacht to your list of starting points. Very safe, beautiful and will give you an alternative to Hazendal.

Agree with Iwan.  The same green route options are available from Zevenwacht, but you will have an extra climb to do - so it just depends on how much exercise you are looking for.  Will also take longer to drive to Zevenwacht which may cut into the daylight hours available.

I bought a permit a few weeks ago and have attempted a few rides but with my lack of navigation skills I always end up getting lost. No issues when I have enough time for a long ride, then I can follow the signage easily; I start at Asara, do red, green, back on red, all the way around, and then yellow, back to Asara. Problem is when I attempt to do a 'quick' one after work I don’t have a clue. Ideally I would like to cut out the long boring red route on Bottelary Road side and go directly to the yellow route or just back to Asara: red, green, back on red directly to yellow. Is that possible? And when I get bored of that, what is the other options (blue/purple maybe) from Asara?

Now I realise that even with the best explanations available I would probably still not get it, so if there is anyone willing to join me for one ride from Asara after work to show me around that would be awesome. Any route that would take 1:30-2 hours should do it.

Thanks :)
