Lights Lumens and what not

Fellow Hubbers,

I’m a bit confused regarding the Voltage of the cycle light battery packs. Most of the Li-Ion packs are rated 8.4V. For the 8.4V you get different mAh ratings (the higher the longer you’re light will burn).

A standard Li-Ion cell is rated 3.7V and 2200mAh. So for e.g. a 6 cell and a 2S3P (2x series; 3x parallel) configuration will give 7.4V and 6600mAh.

So the question, why does the voltage from the websites rate the battery packs as 8.4V? Even the "top" rated Panasonic cells are rated at 3.7V, the mAh is just higher.

Jong. A fully charged single cell will give 4.2V.

Thus a fully charged 2s2p pack will read 8.4V.

The 3.7V rating just indicates where the cell will spend most of it's time when being discharged.

Once the cell's voltage drops below 3V you can consider it pap.

Protected lithium cells have circuitry to prevent over discharge at about 2.8V and also over charge at... dun dun dun 4.2V

TX for the clarification MaxUmis.

My understanding was that the max voltage of the "fully" charged cell was 3.7V & not 4.2V.

Anyone have a quick solution to tighten the connection between the cable from my light and the cable from the battery pack? the connection is fine when im stationary but as soon as I hit a little bump I loose the connection and have to stop and fix it, very irritating. I have tried insulation tape but only lasted a few km's

Okay, so there are a million different light options out there at the moment from guys selling on the hub to the shops to ordering out of the peoples republic...

I just want a light and to know it's good enough for a off road around table mtn, night rides on tar, into the bush on camping etc, that the battery isn't going to do an apple and die in about 4 weeks.

Who has used what and bought from where? Starting to drown in the options. Even on the same sites there are 900 lumens for R595 and 500 lumens for R695. There are like 3 that the specs seem to be the same in the range and spec but just different housing... and then there is the 'real' lumens.

Any recommendations? Don't want to spend thousands and don't need people to think dawn is coming when i ride down the road. Just need to see, it to last and not find out there is a drop off. when I drop off!

Hi thanks for a very informative fred. But seems all the infor here is on lights with external batter packs. I am in the market for a good light that has onboard battery. Only for night training so must last at max 3 hours or so. Looking at the Lezyne 350 lumens. Any views on this or other

When buying a reputable brand you should be ok in believing there ratings. 350 lumen is a lot of lumen and should be more than adequate road and commuting. The big problem with integrated lights are there runtime vs light. Separate battery packs tend to have higher capacity due the the additional weight. The weight of an integrated lights is critical for its stability on the handle bars. At this stage using them for MTB could be a hassle but if you are willing to fork out the money there are some models that would works.

Hi Beer4Recovery,

I suggest you read up on what you need rather than what you want to spend. Reason is your better off spending a little more to get what you'll need as to you having to buy again on a later stage. That said there are several option from 1 LED light to many and for around R 800 you'll get something decent.

I want to join a night ride group and have R500 (max) to spend on a light.

It will be for mountain biking on jeep / single track in the veld. Do I need to spend more?

I'm also in the market for a light, but see they range in price from R150 to thousands. I suspect I will be wasting money on the cheapest ones, but where do I start getting something decent? I really dont want to over invest in a light. Any recommendations will be welcomed!

If you're doing the 94.7, swing by the extremelights guys at the expo. They will have enough there for you to make an informed decision.

Have a look at this one:

If that is not your style, maybe this will work?

We have both in the family and they work very well.

Currently I just use my Energizer 200 lumen headlamp and wrap it around the handlebar stem. Works great for shorter rides when using rechargeable batteries.. Plus it only cost R200..
