They don't really have a choice anymore. The Consumer Protection Act says that if they can't deliver the goods to you at the pre-agreed time and place, they have to give you the option of a full refund.

CPA is a much needed legislation for the South African consumer.

"first check that the importer has stock."

Seen this before. My friend waited 3 weeks for a Shimano Crank that was apparanetly 'in stock' on the Buycycle website. CRC all the way for me.

You are correct, we don’t keep everything you see on BuyCycle.co.za in stock. We only stock high moving and popular items. We rely on stock updates from the official importers and distributors in South Africa – unfortunately not all distributors have accurate and live stock systems, for that reason it happens from time to time that an item is sold on BuyCycucle.co.za even though it was sold out at the distributor since our last stock update. For that reason we don’t hesitate to do refunds. We are able to offer unbeatable prices (through official channels) because we keep less stock and we run a very lean business model. We believe in the business model and think it is the method that offers the best service and prices to the customer.

This is not a new or ground breaking business model, it was pioneered by Jeff Bezos of Amazon.com in 1995, today most online retailers operate in this fashion. As far as I know we are the first to do it this way in the South African cycling industry. To date we’ve been able to ship 98% of orders received, unfortunately things do not always go 100% as in the case of Popeye – for that we apologise.

I like the buycycle guys - I ordered a set of Time RXS cleats, paid and was then told there was no stock - these guys went out of their way to get a set of cleats for me... arrived a few days later, but they were the only guys willing to help...

Ok...got my stuff from buycycle. (or most of it at least)

seems that they don't carry stock at all, because I ordered about 7 items and they were dispatched in 3 different parcels on 3 different dates. This seems stupid to me.

Anyway, the issues:

-The postal address I put in was ignored, and the items was shipped to my billing address. Luckily someone was there to receive them.

-The second parcel only contained my brake pads I ordered.

-I paid R532 for sintered brake pads for my hopes(2 sets). This seemed to be a bit steep. But when the pads arrived and they sent me the plain organic type, I was very displeased. I could have got those sets for less than R100 a set at crc. This is a total rip-off!

-I can't track the third parcel because they sent me the wrong tracking number. It is the same one as the 2nd parcel that they sent.

Again...bottom line...won't ever again support them.

Happy to say my order from Buycycle has arrived, albeit in 4x instalments over two weeks, but all's well that ends well :) Besides all these holidays have not been conducive to conducting efficient business.

The essential item was a set of ZTR 26" Flow rims, the price was good, cf to CRC, and Stan himself. I did get a set of Crest from him last time I needed rims, but they have changed their shipping service provider and shipping costs are through the roof (like $300 US for rims :o last time it was $40 air parcel post). I also got a Hope QR, and some other small things.

The staff at Buycycle also did get back to me with my my queries, so thanks, and keep up the good work (ie good product range at competitive prices to getting on-line overseas)

Tried to support LBS and local Online - not so easy , CRC and Evans are good ..... but each to his own, always good to support local if the service and price is good, I will wherever possible.

Oh and please refrain from buying immitation clothing and **** on the hub, thats even worse than buying outside of SA.

What Buycycle seem to be doing is having an arrangement with the distributors of their products, and the orders are shipped from their warehouses. Hence the fragmented delivery and sometimes doubtful stock levels. But that's okay, as long as it happens and they keep you informed and get back to you. There is no reason why local prices should not be competitive to overseas. We has seen this 'normalisation' with IT products, like Laptops etc. No more cosy & sick margins!

Customer service is important especially when there are delays or problems: they must keep you informed and get back to you, and not lie to you. I just had a horrendous time with shipping agent DHL locally: for some AV equipment I brought in. Took two days for the parcel to arrive in SA after shipping in the USA, and two weeks for clearing & delivery here. Every time I called to follow up I was lied to, given different stories each time, staff were both incompetent and dishonest all the time. Never once got back to me, called or sent email. Could never get past the call centre to supervisors or managers to complain. Very stressful, and totally unacceptable. Sent letter of complaint to management, not even an acknowledgement sent. Sad to say this is a trend in SA.

I understand that buycycle don't carry stock, they can then offer more competative prices, but the problem is if the product is miscommunicated to the suppliers. Like in my case. Order sintered pads and receive organic. This may not seem like a huge problem, but with all the rain falling the organic pads don't last that long. And every time its costing me R500.

I like the pricing of crc, it works out to almost half the price of alot of local shops especially the 2 online shops mentioned here.

Riyadh, even though im a big fan of CRC and im lucky enough to go to the UK a couple times in a year to maximize my purchasing from CRC, I beg to differ, Yes CRC sometimes do have great specials but i have on many occasions bought kit and parts from one of the mentioned SA online stores for much cheaper than what CRC could offer me. And vice versa, sometimes you strike really good deals at CRC its all about making informed purchasing decisions.

True, It is also dependant on what type of product you are purchasing, but there are alot of price descrepencies, even on bicycle prices. But I suppose one will never be able to buy from one place, you must always shop around for the best possible price

I know I am a noob but will add my 2 cents. I have bought stuff from all 3 shops, CWC I was happy with the prices and service. With Buycycle I bought some Fox gloves and MTB pants when they had the Fox sale recently. They didn't have the pants in the size I ordered in stock but they ordered it and came about 3 weeks later, these things happen i guess. In the same order i cancelled a pair of gloves and they refunded my credit card for the amount. They do state on the website they ship items from multiple warehouses and in multiple packages so i guess read the fine print (to be honest i don't usually but i should) Ordered a trainer from CRC, saved R500 there compared to buying local. I guess if you want the stuff there and then buy from the LBS. If you are willing to wait then go online, in the grand scheme of things waiting a few extra days is not the end of the world, that goes with the territory..

wow - quite a heated debate!

I've bought a few items from CWC + visited their store when I was in CPT. Awesome service from the guys there...

Never bought from Buycycle - but it seems to be same type of recurring stock complaints... Time for some process re-engineering maybe...

Hope they refund your money Popeye. Glad you got your refund...

Thanks for the headsup on Bikewear...
