Cellar Posted November 13, 2013 Share What causes that?  Photoshop. IRL they look a lot more muted, although still spectacular if you ask me. While the photos are certainly incredible, there could be some slight photo manipulation going on to make the colors pop a bit more than they would naturally. nigelhicks Posted November 13, 2013 Share What causes that?  From the UNESCO World Heritage websitehttp://whc.unesco.org/en/list/1335  This should go in the rocks and fossils thread - but oh well Danxia is a landform type similar to that of "Karst" topography which forms in Carbonate rich areas - this is due to intense chemical and physical weathering of the Cretaceous Sandstone and Conglomerates that form the hills and cliffs in the region in China.  So in some instances you see steep sides cliffs with narrow valleys similar to Karst areas but as the rock type is not Carbonate they have to be called Pseudo-karst landscapes. Much of the colouration is either due to Chemical weathering, or from the actual rock material where Cretaceous fluvial red-bed sandstones are interbedded with white clay deposits.
