@urbanroyal until the facts are available, we cannot condemn motorists or the cyclist involved. I see all to often where cyclists place themselves at risk by breaking the law, I also see motorists ignore the safety of fellow road users (cyclists)....

I hear what you are saying, that every coin has 2 sides, but I don't completely agree with that sentiment when it is car vs. bicycle, or car vs. pedestrian. I am of the opinoin that cars are dangerous to bikes, not the other way around, so motorists should always be CAREFUL around bikes, and keep the rider's safety in mind, full stop. There may be cases where the cyclists are at fault, like jumping a red light at speed or riding on the wrong side of the road or riding on a highway, but most motorists have little or no regard for cyclists.

like my mom says a story or accident has three sides. our(cyclists) side, their(motorists) side and the truth....

If you see a cyclist running a red robot or dissobying basic traffic rules give him/her a P@#S Klap coz it makes motorists angry and they might not know that they were the cause of frustration and lack of concerne to cyclist that gets a fellow cyclist killed in the end. ag nee man

Oh boy....

Hasn't this been discussed numerous times??

Yes, it is very sad that a fellow human has died. It is sadder that human error was once again involved. Sure, he was cycling at the time. I wager, that by the end of this long weekend many many more would have died on our roads. After all, the great Lemming run between Durbs and Jhbg is about to kick into gear.

99% of us here are MOTORISTS, oh, and 99% of us cycle too (almost forgot). So when are we cyclists, and when are we motorists?

Yet I see our Mr Wyscokwiski's (SP! sy#t, sorry, I tried mate) little rant about two baboons* on bicycles this morning has elicited less response than this here thread.

He is a cyclist; of the DH ilk, but fortunately for those baboons* what he does on the bike probably saved their dumb ass lives. He looks and thinks ahead.

If he didn't he would spend all day eating chunks of dirt and trees.

That he does, means that two more cyclists were able to avoid chewing on tarmac and bumper.

Ride like you mean it!

Cycling on the road is not meant to be a pleasant day out.

Drive like you mean it!

Driving your car is not meant to be a chill journey in an armchair.

If we all at least try, there might be a little less weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth.

* I am at liberty to call them baboons.

Christie, this would work in a world where one person is considerate of another person for any reason and not just safety. Unfortunately, the world I once knew where one stopped to help someone who had broken down, or just to help someone in need appears to have disappeared over time. These days, everyone is out to get whatever they can out of anyone else and generally speaking don't care a rat's bum about anyone but themselves. It's going to be a monumental task to ask someone who has regard for the law of the road to have any form of respect for someone else.

That's just my perception anyway.

So, we have to look out for ourselves in this new improved SA. As a cyclist, I try to be aware of cyclists and motor cyclists when I drive. It costs me nothing and it appears that most people have forgotten that courtesy and friendliness don't have price tags.

Until the general road use attitude changes,I'm afraid that no matter how right we are, that won't change the scientific facts that in a collision, we will always come second in a two horse race. :(

Everyone whines about the taxis and generally, they are a law unto themselves, but as a commuter, I have found them to be far more tolerant and polite to me as a cyclist than anyone else on the road. (I actually see a poll here.)

+1....agree with you ...as a motorist I am so aware of my surroundings and other road users...the fact that I drive international tourists that will sue me to death should anything happen to them....i have insurance though..just make me so much more observant.....and our motorists ...oi need I say more..

I cannot fathom the flaming going on in a thread that should be full of sadness and regret for a fallen cyclist. WE GET IT! SOME MOTORISTS DRIVE BADLY. SOME CYCLISTS RIDE BADLY. NOW MOVE ON!

The reality appears to be that a cyclist was killed whilst out enjoying our beloved sport. RIP fellow cyclist. Our thoughts and prayers to your family, friends and all who knew you.

Quite agree with you here. Found it too.

My thoughts and prays go out to the cyclist who lost his/her life.

Three suggestions:

1. A permanent memorial thread

2. An awareness cycle ride in every province, same day and time- can be organised by PPA or any other

3. Cycle Safe advocacy campaign- this by Pick 'n Pay, ABSA, Cell C, The Argus, Coronation, ect: we only hear from them with

big events. A regular published ad, in this regard, will get them far more mileage

I read this and just wondered !

Firstly, condolences t the family, RIP cyclist.

If you look at some of your postings, you have to feel sad that you can display this aggresive attitude towards motorist.

Firstly, they are aggresive as well, they are gatvol for cyclists as well.Thn you guys come on this sad forum were someone has died, and yo swear and try to win ground on your bad attitude,

a bad attitude on The Hub,

*** I just wonder how your attitude is when you are on the bike ***

Maybe start to change your own attitude first, Dont you guys have respect for other ?

Do you really think a bad attitude on the bike will win the war against motorist?

@ Slave: I don't think this inconsiderate attitude is the norm in other countries. Imo it is the fault of the traffic cops, and it started going down the drain when the old government was still in power. They spent a fortune on the boder war, and simply let traffic / road law enforcement slide. Then we got a new government, and it went from bad to worse with affirmative action, corrupt cops, turning a blind eye to taxis, "purchasing" a license without a test etc.

A lot of motorists today drive like taxis - cutting accross lanes, white lines, jumping red lights, driving and passing in the yellow lane etc. That is why thousands die on our roads.

I spent some time in Europe, and the situation is way different. One one of my first road rides in Germany, I got out of the bike lane and onto the road because of too many slow movers in the bike lane. It was busy, and soon I heard the first car approach from behind. I rode as far to the side of the road like I would in SA, and waited for him to pass. After a while, I looked back to see if he had turned off. To my surprize, he was still there, patiently doing 30 km/h at a nice following distance, with 3 more cars behind him, even though he would have been able to squeeze past. He passed me a bit later when he could pass into the oncoming lane. He treated me as if I was another car. No hooting, middle fingers etc. even thought there was a bike lane next to the road as well. I later saw that this was the norm.

Sadly, I don't think SA will ever get there.

Why don't we arrange a support group at the court for these from now on. We need to start voicing these.

With you on this one Paul,I will be there. That Wierdaroad is bad news with racing traffic in fancy cars making there way towards Sutherland Rigde . I was in a very bad motorcar accident there myself 5 years ago...........also a speeding motorist. Culprit just got on a aircraft and fled the back to his home country-India,nice hey ?
