Hi,

I am looking to upgrade my marathon wheel set. I ask for your opinions and experiences on the following options:

Shimano XTR

Mavic SLR

Easton EA90

I haven't owned any of those sets mentioned... but from experience I would avoid the Shimano hubs as they use a cup-n-cone system. I would go for something with sealed bearings.

Just my 2c worth

What's going to happen is that 30 people will respond and you'll get 30 different opinions.

Besides the fact that you mention these wheels are for marathons, the other thing to disclose is how much you weigh (I've also asked this question before, and since I'm a heavier oke my questions about spokes, rims, etc., got answers that were based on which wheels were best for my weight).

I have used XTR for a year now, bomb proof an excellent wheel.

I really like the Mavic's but understand that their seal on the bearings were giving problems awhile ago, know of three riders who experienced bearing failures.

The new XTR comes out in a Trail and Race version, the latter being lighter and aimed at the XC market, at sub 1400g one of the lighter wheels on the market and still reliable.

You are wrong. You're gonna get about 60 opinions.

I have the XTR's.

Just to correct patches, cup and cone bearings have nothing to do with the seal. They are sealed bearings.

Cup and cone require more maintenance. I decided to learn to service them myself so that I didnt have to take them to someone every time. But its really quite easy. Besides that, the maintenance costs can be quite high. Spokes cost around R95 a spoke (compared to the R9-R20 of most other spokes).

Other than that I have really enjoyed my wheels. The are strong and light, have lasted 3 hard years of riding, and are still in very good condition.

I haven't used the other wheels on your list so I can't comment on those.
