Tell us more about that singlespeed...

the single with the blue rims? - That is a second generation prototype of our Contraband bikes hardtail. It is designed to run both 650B or 29er wheelsizes and is able to use forks from 100-140mm of travel. It is SS and gear compatible using an eccentric BB.

It has a Reynolds 853 main triangle and cromo stays. The bike is designed primarily as a trail hardtail and has been fantastic so far. I even raced that one at the SSWC to 9th. We are finalizing the last geometry tweaks for production now. Expect framesets in the market early next year. We are working on 3 new models which we will get out during the course of next year. Expect them to be different.... But in a good way.

Hi, I bought this Scott Genius MC30 in 2008 and I have been using it mostly for marathon and a bit of trail riding. I have now bought a 29er and I have this sudden urge to mess arround with a bit of DH. Do you guys think the Genius is up to it? It won't be too serious as my skills won't allow it.........

I would suggest you look for a bike more suited to DH if that is what you are looking at doing. The Genius that you have will have a head angle too steep and top-tube too long for DH. Also not sure how well the bike will hold up to the rigors of DH mtbing. For gravity riding, I'd suggest a bike with a minimum of 160mm of travel.

I second that. Not only will the frame geometry make you feel less than comfortable on a DH course (yes, even if you're taking it easy), but there would be some component changes that would be almost essential:

  • shorter stem
  • wider bars
  • possible brake rotor diameter upgrade
  • chain guide (very important for DH riding. Last thing you want is to drop a chain.

I kow you stated that you won't be too serious, but a more gravity orientated bike will make a world of difference to your experience and confidence. Make friends with the local DHers in your hood. See if any of them have a "village bicycle" which they don't mind people trying out. (Gauteng and KZN DH both have one). Give it a few runs and see if you're hooked

I don't want to give out to many details on the bikes yet, but post a question or two and I will give some answers. We have a website (www.contrabandbikes.co.za), but it has not been updated as yet. We will be updating the site shortly with more details on the new models and brand philosophy.

To give you the genres of bike we are looking at: Trail hardtail, Race hardtail, Trail/all-mountain and road/CX frames. We will more likely than not be offering 2 grades of build kit on each model.

Do any of you guys know a rider out of Pietermaritzburg Dave Dinkelman?, man I saw that kid riding the other day,he can shred a trail.

Speak to Uncle Rico here on the hub, he knows that Dave guy pretty intimately

Can't wait to see what you guys bring out! especially in the All Mountain and also CX (cause everyone NEEDS a SS CX in their quiver) genres

Are you manufacturing in SA or importing?

Alu/Steel?

Dual Sus?

I had one just like that and it is more suited to trail riding than any AM usage.

Nice bikes, but once I rode the Shova after the Scotty it was very apparent that a more hard hitting trail / AM bike will fair far better in the long run.

Just for the hell of it I have attached pic of the Scotty and then the Shova

There's a 3 day enduro race at dirtopia this year. Including a night stage. Sounds interesting.

All the bikes will be manufactured in Taiwan. All the geometry and design is done on our side. Prototypes are manufactured, tested and then revised. Then we do it all over again until we get it right. Manufacturing locally is too expensive and laborious. Even Morewoods parts are not all manufactured locally (Bikes are welded/assembled locally).

The All-mountain bike will be Alu. Dual-sus.

CX bike will be steel

650B HT will be Ti

Thanks for the replies folks. I gues i'll just stick to the trails with the Scott for now. The Shova's look like awesome bikes, maybe one day when the finances allow it, i'll try to get a frame and build the Scott's parts over.

Cheers

Check out my low tech solution for chain slap. I've been looking at that bionicon device but that's $50. This cost 6 cable ties and a piece of irrigation pipe I had lying on my work bench at home. Shifting is a little slower I'll admit but there's no noticeable chain drag and the noise from the deralieur is significantly less. I know it's not pretty but hey.
