What to do with 8 spd shifters?

So I recently bought a second hand entry level trials bike and for some or other reason the shifter was converted to a SRAM X7 gripshift. It's very annoying changing gears every time you bunny hop- so i'm looking to get a normal shifter.

 

I'm having real trouble still finding a 8 spd shifter and i dont want to convert to single speed- what would be the consequence of using a 9spd shifter?

If you are going to fit a new shifter anywway, why couldn't you fit a 9s casette too? Then it will be 9s. Fitting a 8s to a 9sp casette will not work as the space between the cogs and "gear positions" of the shifter is different.

nothing wrong with gripshift...since its a new bike for you maybe give it a month to get used to it before splashing out some cash on it unneccesarrily.

It really restricts my riding- it changes gears everytime i lift the front end, cant stand the ****

Not looking to spend too much seeing as the casette is basically brand new... Just need to get rid of that flippen gripsh!t

Shop around. There are still a few 8spd shifter out there. I bought a new set a few months ago from Cycle Centre in the Pavillion in Westville. Check your LBS parts bin as well. What about posting a wanted add in the classifieds? I am sure there are a few guy who have upgraded and have the old parts lying around...

8 speed shifters must still be around. Try an old bike shop , not a fancy modern one. Or 2nd hand. But i agree , gripshift is rubbish for technical riding.

If you're looking at old stuff and don't mind a retro look, consider an old 7 speed XT top mount thumb shifter which had a "secret" 8th click built in to handle the subsequent introduction of 8 speed cassettes in the early 90's.
