Things I've learnt from commuting

ANTICIPATE

Ride defensively

Never assume someone saw you

Expect drivers to do the unexpected

Signal and make your intentions clear

Make yourself VISIBLE with flashing lights

Avoid the dangerous roads whenever possible

Avoid the dangerous times wherever possible

Alter your route to make it SAFER rather than quicker/shorter/easier

Good advice

Also:If the traffic light is green for you ,does not mean the guy at the red light is going

         to stop,especially early morning.

Beware for guys driving without lights

Beware of guys driving on the wrong side of the road

Beware of guys overtaking each other while you are approaching

them ,even if you have lights flashing.Container trucks on Marine service

        rd

Beware at traffic lights early morning, while you are waiting for red to

change, you are a sitting duck ,be alert as to who is hanging around and

         fancys your bike.

4:00 .... and the rain wakes me .... and then it HITS me .... car at work, bike in the garage ....

Will admit, if I had any other option would have left the bike at home ...  :whistling:

No rain during my commute, but lots of wet tar .... thankful I fitted that front mudguard

and then I got on a quiet back road, standing on the peddles as the road climbs steadily ... zzZZZOOOmmmm ....zzZZZOOOmmmm ....zzZZZOOOmmmm ....zzZZZOOOmmmm ....

WOW    Those Hornets sound like a swarm of Hornets on the wet road when you give it some stick ...  :w00t:

At work everybody zipps up their jackets, while the 16 minute morning ride has left me nice and refreshed for the day.

Commuting by bike ROCKS

I've learnt that I really miss my commute to work, but I suppose on mornings like yesterday and today, with proper Cape Town winter rains, I'm quietly happy to have to use the stinky oilburner.

Not that I am commuting at the moment but just as well.  We have had so much rain the past 24 hours and it is set to continue for the next 24 hours.  Emergency services all over Bavaria on standby as flooding is starting at places.

Monday morning "only" had about 30 to 50mm rain ... bit hairy if you ask me ....

Tuesday only a few mm at 4:00, nothing while I commuted, and then a few drops later in the morning.

I check the weather forecast in the afternoon, then make the call between 2 or 4 wheels for the commute .... forecasters missed this mornings rain .... going to be interesting to see how long before get to work drenched ....  :whistling:

I have given up looking at weather forecast's ..... Just keep a rain shell in my commuter pack and ride no matter what.... far more reliable that way :P

got a castelli jacket from CWC when they had a sale a season or so ago ... was really well priced, so I bought it.

works well.

any light weight jacket that repels water will work in CT given that you layer underneath the jacket .... means you can tailor your warmth comfort level as the season changes.

the light weight jackets also dry very quickly.

cape storm used to do the "apple" or something like that ... those are nice too.

Cycling lanes means nothing in Cape Town

Welcome to the Republic of the Western Cape

Now here are some local rules of da road my bru ek sê...

- "cycling lanes" are where mom's taxi parks and where big square boxes pass other 4-wheeled boxes ...

- Pavements are where cyclists commute in relative safety ....  :whistling:

uhm ... wonder how pedestrians "commute" safely ...

jokes aside - glad you are doing better and that your bike is sorted

hi Guys

Came down Kendall in the cycle lane at about 55km/h. Car turned into Kendall from Loerie I basically had nowhere to go. Into and over the corolla. Ambulance, operations, 49 xrays all this on the night of 24 April. There was an eyewitness driving behind be witnessing the whole event. Nobody who saw it happen gave me a chance but I am very blessed. Only two fingers broken on the right hand. 17 Stitches in my left leg. The wires in my fingers coming out 4 June. Left leg and knee still tender. All stitches removed all ready.

All that and one merida 5000 gone. Which my insurance replaced.

One lucky Boy

and a special mention to

Captain Fatbastard Mayhem

This is the MAN to Speak to about medical aid. Really no bullshitt about that
