INcredibly clever. I had one that was given to me when my uncle and aunt that moved to NZ. She thought herself to jump out the window through the burglar bars if she wanted to go outside and "make" and then come back in. Very affectionate and very caring. She also once went missing. We think she was stolen. Six months later we hear a scratch on the door and guess who!

Also very strong dogs in that they never get sick!

i like South african breeds

I know the Boerboel and Ridgeback quite well... very good temperaments...

This is Wiki's take on the Africanis

The Africanis is well disposed without being obtrusive: a friendly dog showing watchful territorial behaviour. The breed is independent and territorial, but highly trainable. They can however, become grumpy as they grow older, and may also become quite difficult when kept with other dogs in a pack.

How are they a guard dogs?

Project Dog in Durban has quite a lot of Africanis puppies for adoption...

Anyone have any experience with them?

1 x "African Hunting dog" or Africanis

Mother was a pure-bred Sharpei, father was a happy wanderer.

Absolutely brilliant dog, and fiercely loyal

You won't go wrong...

And the best part is, somewhere, hidden deep inside is what we think might be either Bull Terrier or Pit-Bull DNA.

Let's just say our local population do not venture anywhere near our gate....

He's brilliant - the Sharpei DNA comes through very strongly - they were actually bred to protect kids. We don't have kids of our own, but when visitors come, he's been perfect.

My dog will chew your dog's dinosaur very quickly

Lol, if your dog can get it from him.

He loves to take something that he thinks the other dogs want and will parade it past them and show it off. And then protect it.

I like to think that parents of young kids the world over rejoiced at the site of this....
