I've currently got 15 but always looking for more. They vary from the tropical regions like Brazil and venezuela to the more "old world" species from India, Sri lanka, etc. Can't keep local species due to permitting issues believe it or not.

Just got one of these a few weeks back, mine is still a tiny 1cm spiderling, cost R650. This is a pic of it as an adult, gorgeous.

This is a Blue fang tarantula for Brazil, French Guiana, Guyana and Suriname. Also in the same family is the skeleton taratula, emerald skeleton and burgundy skeleton.

This is the skeleton tarantula, have a tiny sling of this one too:)

I popped into a reptile shop here in Bloem this morning. They have all sorts of tarantulas. Priced from R350 to R2500. The R2500 one massive. The R350 one was probably half grown. Scary looking things.

how many "critters" do you have? I quite like spiders, but I wouldn't want one as a pet.

this rain spider was sitting on the door of my car. I drove on the highway and it didn't budge.

eventually "dropped" him off when I got to my destination

This is a Poecilotheria metallica, common name is a Gooty foot ornamental indiginous to Sri lanka. A 1cm sling goes for between R2000 to R2500 depending on the breeder. They can get very pricey!!! Oh and a female can lay between 200 to 2000 eggs depending on species so it's quite a lucrative industry.

Tell you what when I throw that cricket in he jumps across his terrarium in what I can only think of as happiness.

I do own 2 bassets and they make up for the spiders lack of excitement though. The tarantulas are display animals, fascinating to watch them make webs, carry substrate around and especially when grooming themselves.

What is a sling?

It's a term used for a spiderling which is a baby spider. They start out in an egg sac, you remove the eggs incubate, they then molt into whats known as an egg with legs and then molts into a 1st instar spiderling, then 2nd instar, 3rd instar, etc.

You can leave them to molt to 1st instar in the egg sac as they would in nature but then the mortality rate is quite high, you get more slings by removing and seperating the young before they cannabilize each other.

Why can you not keep local spiders?

You need permits which are issued by Nature conservation and they don't hand them out freely. If you bred say your 2 baboon tarantulas and then got gatvol and released the now 500 spiders they could destroy the balance wherever you live.

Tarantuals are also not legal in all of our provinces.

Just out of interest, the Brazilian pinktoe tarantula has now overthrown the balance in Florida from being released bu hobbyists, also a few boa species. The Florida enviroment is perfect for exotics to thrive in.
