Smoking and Cycling

Apparently if you smoke dagga you go faster (that's what an old man told me in the Transkei, that their horses go faster once stoned)

My Dad bred canaries. He imported a whole streepsak full of Hemp Seeds. He soaked them in water and fed them to the canaries before a show. It made them more perky and lively. Boy oh boy did those canaries look forward to show days.

I sold the seeds to guys at school. Made some pocket munny out of that. We grew our own in the corner of the garden behind the chikken hok.

In the second year of my national service, the camp i was stationed at we had to run the 2.4 twice a week, the dude who held the record for our course was a chain smoker during the day, smoked dagga and got pissed most nights when he was not on duty. There were some seriously fit okes who tried their damndest to beat him.....but he smoked them all ;)

He was a seriously fukt up guy and his fitness probably came from all the time he spent in DB, not from smoking...

What was your best on the 1,5? (in my days it was still 1,5 miles) That is in bosbroek, t-shirt, patrollie kit, boots, R1 and Staaldak. I broke 10 minutes two or three times when I was at my fittest.

We had a mate at varsity who was like that. Rock up to an athletics meet pissed out of his mind and then run the 10000m sub 30min.

Of course he denied he was a drinker with a running problem.

I wouldn't think that it is measurable or quantifiable. It would be interesting to know if there has ever been a study done but I wouldn't imagine so.

From my experience I would say that if I have a couple of cigarettes on a Saturday night in my Monday session my performance will be down by as much as 10%. I feel less energetic, I battle to suck in air and I can't hit the high heart rate numbers that I usually can. By Wednesday/Thursday I am pretty much back to normal again.

In fact I am always shocked as to how much of an impact even those few cigarettes can have on me. Just shows how bad they must be for us. Really makes me wonder why I bother. Damn beer ruining my judgement.

Now now, let's be responsible. Don't EVER blame the beer, for beer is good. It is like a vegetable shake, with all the goodness of barley, malt, hops and pure clean water. Yum yum yum.

I hate to point out the what seems to me obvious - hemp, and cannabis(ganja)are two different

things. Budgies and other singing birds are well known to enjoy hemp seed - not because of any hallucinogenic effect but rather the high nutrient and oil content. Hemp seed would only have produced male plants, completely useless for recreational smoking purposes. possibly EC1 meant ganja seed, in which case the canaries would have been none the wiser, although happy for some food.

We had to run 2.4 boots, full kit, staaldak, webbing and geweer and it was tough, if your company did not do it in under a certain time it was up Majuba for you.

Although our camp was extremely strict and paraat some of the guys managed to smuggle some good **** in and smoke it before 2.4 to make it easier. I remember I was alway envious of them as we really afkaked.

I was glad when we got to the border and they stopped 2.4s. You still had to be fit for long patrols but it was a different kind of fitness - endurance.

Not quite. They're the same thing - hemp is cannabis; what is generally called hemp has a lower level of THC compared to that which is grown for recreational rather than industrial application.

results may vary.

The only way to determine the effect of smoking on fitness is to

a. start smoking

b. exercise.

c. quit smoking

d. exercise.

e. measure the results.

I know that some guys (training partners) only quit smoking and partying when it became clear to them that they had hit the fitness ceiling and a change of lifestyle was the only way to get better. (I am withholding names to protect the guilty).

but as I said "results may vary".

Oh, the SANDF still does fitness tests. the battery includes:

2.4km run

sit ups

push ups

shuttle runs and

a 4km march

You need 60% overall to pass. (in the old days it was a minimum of 60% for each catergory and pull-ups were included?!)

This is all done in PT kit. At this stage I can still muster a 9 min for a 2.4km, (60% for my age is some where around 11 minutes) which is a bit slow but still gives me about 120% which means I can sit out one of the other exercises completely if I chose to do so.

There is also the fitest soldier competition in October each year that is done in full battle dress.

The Metro pigs might do well to take a leaf out of the SANDF book then...!
