Smoking and Cycling

DCM you stopped living a healthier lifestyle too, good for you ;) . Remember when you stop, that the lus for a smoke only lasts for a few minutes then goes away. you've got to resist in those few minutes. And if you do smoke, don't ever buy a box of smokes, rather smoke someone else's. Take this from somebody who found it easy to give up smoking, I gave up lots of times :P , but gave up finally 5 years ago.

That is 4 of us so far! Good choise and good luck.

I did quit for 2 years before. Was not as hard as I thought. So stupid to start again. This time... :D

Are all of you just going straight cold turkey? No patches? Gums? Last time I quit, I couldn't have done it without patches.

Good luck.

Sorry to burst your bubble....... but..... although the nicotine leaves your body the addiction of cigarettes is so severe that you will forevever be a possible smoker. I sometimes still get the urge ..... fifteen years later to kill for a cigarette. Those moments are now verrrry far and few between but the urge is still there.

One thing as well...... as you were a ex-smoker..... that is if you succeed...... you will hate the filthy habits of smokers..... you will become a vehement anti smoker and have to learn to handle the arrogant behaviour patterns of smokers.

Thanks for your comments Oom H. But I'll never know if I dont give it a try. It's been 8 hours already!! B)

DMC007 ...you know its worth it.

The logical view: take a page draw a line in the middle. Mark one side as "benefits" and the other as "disadvantages".

I think you see which way the scale swings.

Be true to yourself and your intellect. Don't sell yourself short

Keep this in your pocket.

I honestly couldn't think of a single benefit.

Some people came up with: Nothing beats coffee and a cigarette in the morning or a cigarette after dinner or with a beer

Its great as a stress relieving mechanism.

I use it as an easy way to control my weight.

Not very convincing and easy to knock down.

(An ex-smoker is the best non-smoker to help you, because its familiar)

I started a smoking thread a couple weeks back as a Poll, it also got quite heated, I see it is still alive, so if you want to read some more emotive smoking posts, head on over to :

Smoking Poll

Interesting to see that about 20% of the voters smoke.

@DMC007: You have to make it clear to your wife that the money that you used to spend on is only yours to use to pimp your bike.

I hate the fact that I ever started smoking. I started when I was 16, I stopped at 30. For five years I smoked 20 a day, for few years 30 and for the last 4 years I was puffing in excess of 40 a day. I stopped on the spot cos I wanted to be a better person. Damn those things, I still crave it, every now and then. It is crazy. Next time you light up, have a look at your kids and partner and say to them "Sorry but I dont give a **** about you, to want to live and share happy times with you guys, I would rather die than spend more years with you" how does that feel?

Why do we think that people who stop smoking are hero's? That they have done a good thing? That they have achieved something? We were all dumb ****s for starting in the first place.

Few things to think about when quitting smoking:

Nicotine withdrawal is less than a week.

It is th habit bit that is difficult to break.

Cutting down on cigs only works if you working to a stop date.

If you intend quitting on the 25th then you should immeditely stop smoking in your car and in your house.

We confuse the enjoyment we get from cigs with the enjoyment we get from good food and drink since we always smoke then or when socialising with friends.

If you have failed to quit before it means you are more likely to be successful now.

TWELVE WEEKS: If you can get through the first twelve then you have a 60-70% chance to still not be smoking come august 2011.

I have quit now for the past six years and I spend all my cig money on my bike :)

Can you rmember how much better that good food tasted when your sense of taste came back.

I do not even remember how much it cost. I use the money I save from www.chainreactioncycles.com to buy cycling tools.
