I think your preparation is fine and you should manage it! (I would say you may even manage closer to 4hrs). My 94.7 average speed has always been higher than what I manage on a 60km loop around the cradle, but then I do generally try harder in a race :P . Best of luck for it, and enjoy, that's the most important thing!

I agree - for a first 94.7 and with realistic expectations (not like you are trying for a sub-3!) your training is fine. My first 94.7 was 4 yrs ago (after about 5 yrs on the couch) My training was a sum total of 3 rides over 3 weeks - distances 30, 40 and 62 respectively. My 94.7 time was about 4.44 - and I was in no way broken at the end of the race - but the cycling bug had bitten.... Key thing, as some have mentnioned above, don't go chasing any time on your first - ride the first half within yourself and if you feeling strong hammer it home on the way back and have fun riding past all the walkers...

Did my first 94.7 two years ago. Max training distance I did was 75km. Managed a 4:20 on a mountain bike with slicks.

The last 20km was not too bad although I had never ridden that distance.

I suggest that do do not ride faster than your training speed for the first 67km and if you feel strong, nail the last 30km.

The last thing you want to do is a superfast 1st 50km and have nothing in the tank for the 2nd half of the race.

Also, if you are not seeded,(which I suspect may be so in your case) you will be starting with the fun riders at the back. Expect to ride the race solo as there is virtually no organisation into a group at the back end of the field.

Also, dont forget to have fun and enjoy yourself.

The N14 beckons...

And the bit after that.

They don't call it Heartbreak hill for nothing.

That's when you realise your time has gone for a ball of ****

and do not forget the sunscreen . . .

The 94,7 was my first big race 4 years ago. Did not train alot (weekends only) and longest distance were 63km round the cradle the week before the race.

I started in QQ - The first few okes formed a group (20 odd) and I joined in ( Brave as hell . . . )

After 60km I was done and limped home - 3h36 but ended up in the first aid tent with a drip . . . Lesson learned.

Pace yourself , have fun and if there is anything left after N14 / Diepsloot go for it!

my 2 cents worth . . . :)

On a side note, is the craddle considered an easy/medium/hard ride ?

I generally start at S Country, head right at the circle and complete 2 to 2 1/2 loops. Will be aiming to 3+ loops to get my goal for 2011 of completing a 100km ride here.

rolling hills - I'd say medium as you've catagorised - but of course it all depends on how hard you ride it - and especially how hard you hit the hills...

You prepared wrong. You needed to do the actual race distance at least once. Probably more than once.

You will probably take more than 5hours for the 94.7.

hey TNT1,

just to let you know i did the 94.7 in 3:29! :)

2:30 for the first 67km, 30min to recover after hitting the wall, 2hrs for the remaining 28km?

Hey Edman,

Nice one W@nnabe.. 60km rides at the cradle are already more than 90% of 94.7 virgins do so that was already a good start... add in a ride or 2 at suikerbos and the proof of the pudding is in the eating! nice going - it took me 4 years to get my time down below the 3.30....

I ride my bike 3 times a week. My route is 51km long and takes me about 2 hours to complete including robots stops etc etc. I did 3h23 for 94.7 and had plenty left afterwards. The last time I did a 100km ride was about 6 months ago. Quality not quantity.
