If you are training for the 94.7 near Diepsloot, please be very careful and ride in large groups. I was bikejacked and shot at this morning whilst riding on the R114 Muldersdrift across the road from N14 opposite Gomes Sand. I was just behind (about 50m) two other riders on the same stretch of road so if you are riding in a group dont let riders drop too far off the back.

These guys dont care about anybody. They fired the pistol twice at my head at point blank range but luckily the pistol misfired so they then forced me off the bike and searched me taking various things like my bike, wedding ring and cell phone before running off across the N14 and into Diepsloot, turning once and shooting at me when I got up and swore at them. This time the gun went off but the bullet missed me.

I can only thank the Lord that they got away with material things and I got away with my life and uninjured.

I would also like to thank the Erasmia SAPS and Metro police for their thoroughness and not taking this as a petty crime. they went back to the scene and even found the bullet casing so lets hope they catch the A??holes.

If anybody out there is offered a Merida Matts Sub 60 that has a Desert dash sticker on the RHS of the frame near the Merida sign, please contact me.

Thanks and take care riding.

Glad you are okay.

Sjoe!

Dangle. The words "Straw Man" come to mind.

"1. You sound pretty sure.

2.That was 2 years ago, 2 years ago they took bike at knifepoint, now it's guns.

3.It happens everywhere, even in our suburbs.

4.There will always be more , but a slapgat run away approach is not going to help either."

1. The word doubt is added in to show I am not 100% sure. That being said I am 98% sure - how sure are you that they missed?

2. Knife is worse - they are more likely to stab than shoot you because its comparative silent.

3. No its does not happen everywhere - and it sure does seem to happen a lot more near squatter camps/locations.

4. I was not advocating a run-away - I am just saying that its better we don't cycle past squatter camps than cycle past them and then try to apprehend the culprits.

You will have to explain your straw man approach.

1.98 %.....mph, you are not sure at all, are you ?

2.Approach me with a knife and see where it ends up.

3.Everywhere, I can list incidents all day long.

4.Not suggesting that you advocated a run-away approach, but your original comments are actually pretty lame, quite indicative of one who has never been involved in having his/her bike taken from them.

I doubt they were trying to hit you.

About two years ago I was spoke to some policemen who patrol the Diepluit area and they regularly get shot at but never shot (so far).

I think it is also time we wake up and realise you cannot ride a bicyle worth thousands of rands next to squatter camp with over a million people who are by all measures poor, uneducated and can buy unlicensed firearms for <R100.

Anyhows, I hope they catch these criminals but I am worried that more will just take their place.

Pointing a fire arm at point blank range to his head ...not trying to hit him????

Exactly, but two years ago a cop told me blah,blah........

I was livid when I read this last night, it might not be long before we have a fatality.

It's getting out of control.

"Just keep peddling"... read the OP properly - "they fired the pistol twice at my head at point blank range but luckily the pistol misfired" - its hard to miss at point blank and this is not what happened. They missed from the other side of the N14...

You seem to shift the blame to the cyclist - a lot of us use this road. making it a "no go" area will simply leave those who occasionally or inadvertnantly wonder by there even more exposed....

MTB Nutter, glad you're ok...

Guys...the real solution is to get manufacturers to drop their bike prices...that way the bastards will stop the hijackings...

I'm busy building a prototype of a bike equipped with voice activated sawnoff shotguns...anybody want to test ride it through the townships?

The manufacturers will not drop their prices to R200 for which these thugs sell their loot.

Doubt it, sure there is a market for selected bikes but for the most part they could not care less if your bike is PnP or Pinarello. The Carte Blanche episode the bikes were recovered days later still being ridden by the bike jackers. Most part we are easy targets for items such as cell phones and wallet's.

I really don't think that Just Keep Pedalling is wrong to suggest that certain areas have more attacks than others and that its sensible to try and avoid these areas.

One that note, I asked on another thread what the situation is like at Northern Farm at the moment, and it seems as though its fairly under control. Are there any more opinions on that?

I haven't heard of any incidents at N-farms for at least 6 months. Not sure about the roads/paths out the back gat though.
