Congratulations! You've just made yourself "the one" in ye olde expression "there's always one".

Thanks, appreciate it.

But you see you are not the only one with the engineers curse, i.e. being pedantic about everything and what not. That eventually manifests into compulsive non-conformism, as in my case... "Trends" erk be big time.. Show me a real problem, and solve it with a real solution, then I'm as happy as..

But about this whole granny blade being obsolete thing: If you're MTBing and not using granny-blade, you're going it wrong. Plain and simple..

Benefit of 3x10: Higher high, lower low. That is the only real benefit of it. 3 x 10 makes sense for XC or Trail, but for AM i don't use a big ring anyway, running 2x9 at the moment. So 2 x 10 would make sense.

If you're stronger you can push a lower "granny" so can go bigger on the big chainring getting closer to negating a triple. But for the not so fit 3x10 is still the way to go IF you're doing flat and fast XC sections.

I am saying shoudl the ratio not be 26x39 and not 38? Or is that a shimano thing?

26x39 is designed to work together so you can not run a 26 wit a 42....on a Sram 2x10

It's like that because the ideal ratio is 1 : 1.5

24 / 36

26 / 39

28 / 42

You / catch the drift

They'll be able to make any combo work, just won't be best suited or ideal.

Size of cassette is limited by

1. axle + free hub (11, although Hope has a clever solution to bring it down to 9 READ HERE)

2. what the rear der is capable of (36)

3. Ideal jump between gears

What about us 1x9ers or 1x10ers?

If you're running 1 x then 10 makes sense.

Yes, I don't have the smallest small gear or the biggest big gear, but the ratios are perfect for my own riding style.

That's the point. Do what works for YOU. But we'll never have an end to stupid threads like should I ride XT pedals with XTR crank, bar ends or not and the likes.

I can probably guarantee that a 32 chainring with an 11-36 cassette will be more than ample for most riders on this forum.

Oh, on a 29er of course :-)

32 is a bit small. I have calculated jumping from my 2 x 9 36-24 | 11-34 to 1 x 10 33 | 11-36

Lighter gears I will loose

granny, 2nd & 3rd and a bit...

Harder Gears I will IN EFFECT loose

11 and 12

Top end I'm okay with cause for AM I'm hardly ever in 36 - 11, and for climbing I will just have to get fitter. Anyway, back to your point. 36 on AM is okay and 33 or 32 could work, but I'm running 38/26 on a Anthem 29er and I spin out quite often. Mainly because I don't ride where I would with the AM bike.

Luckily that was 'bar ends or not' cause if it was 'bar ends on risers' it would have been you and me behind the bike shed this afternoon ;)

Ok let me clear this up - I have a granny gear but I hardly use. Hardly is not never! You see, i'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

I have yet to do a race where I felt I could use another gear. Or let me rephrase 3x9 gets me to the line. :D

The reason I don't use my granny gear is I find that I can not get a gear ratio where I get great traction AND momentum at the same time.

Yes, I can go 1x9 like Sir Dangle suggested BUT just using the big blade will bend my chain when I go to the biggest cog on the cassette. Or not?

Practically speaking, with a triple you only have 3 gears where you DON'T have cross chain.

2 x 10 or 2 x 9 you'll be okay to use full cassette in either. 1 x 10 you'll be perfectly fine. On a 3 x ?? only real problem is when you're running upper half of cassette when in big blade or lower half of cassette when running smallest chain ring.

1 x ?? or 2 x ?? just make sure you set chain line before setting off.
