Even on road races it is rediculous that people just throw their rubbish on the road, s

ay something to them and they look at you like you are crazy. No respect for themselves or the enviroment.

Littering on the bike is just unacceptable.

And the same goes for people throwing cigarette butts out of their window whilst driving

It might not be cycling related, but it makes my blood boil (more than anything else)!

If you want to smoke that is your problem, but what gives you the right to use the environment as a trash can?

FAAAAAAARRRKK!!! This annoys me!! People who throw their stompies from their cars should be thrown out of their cars so they can walk/crawl back to pick up their little poison stubs.

Have a little respect for yourself and the world you live in!

It obviously has to do with up bringing or something.

We have a 3 year old daughter who will walk a hundred metres down the beach to throw her ice cream stick in the bin without being asked. She has even taken to picking up other people's litter, saying "that's disgusting" and looking for a bin to put it in.

Now we have not formally "trained" her to do so as far, as I am aware, but then again it may just be instinctive for us to tell our kids off when they do litter, so she has learnt. They also learn from example. I refuse to even flick a straw wrapper out a window. I rode for over an hour the other day with a banana peel in my jersey pocket. It can be argued that a banana skin is biodegradable so no harm in tossing it but if every rider tossed their apple cores and banana peels we'd soon have trails filled with fruit bits that have not yet biodegraded.

And I ain't no hero! To me it is just the natural way to do things.

And don't even get me started on the f***ers who toss their cigarette butts wherever they like!

After our Journey 4 Sight ride this past January, a local laid a complaint with the council about litter dumping. She provided pictures to back up her complaint. She also somehow joined the dots to imply a connection with the start/finish venue (Cape Academy) and our Pedal Power ride.

From there, things moved rapidly upstream through the council's investigative procedures, including involvement of the local councillor.

This took place even though:

* The rubbish was situated around the corner and some way up the road from the venue.

* A cursory examination of the evidence suggested that the rubbish was more likely from very uncivic-minded residents or party organisers than from cyclists.

* To the convener's knowledge, there have been no littering complaints of note in the more than two decades we've run our event.

Yet we got dragged in to this mess and temperatures were raised all round.

The fools who force us to put up with their discarded filth clearly couldn't care less about the environment in general, never mind caring about organised events. The point is, organised rides are under scrutiny as never before. It doesn't take much for an official to stamp "permission declined". It's too late then to start pointing fingers.

On a recent Argus I (puff, pant) pedalled my way up to a GU litterer on Chappies to tell him he was an idiot and didn't he hear the specific startline request about not littering. In response, he called me a racist.

I took that as a compliment, because I didn't consider myself as anything more than a funrider.

Mountain bikers don't litter on the trails they ride. If you litter, you are not embracing the etho's of the ride. It doesn't matter how many f****ing race you win, you are not a mountain biker if you toss your gu wrapper on the trail. Being a Mountain biker is more than just skills or riding fast, It is also an attitude, and beer, beer is important.

If I remember correctly according to TNT1 the litter on the R4S is appalling

Saw it happen too often on the DC ride. People chucking their water bottles as soon as they are empty.

Why not wash and reuse them?

I scored a Gu bottle that way on the DC :D Mrs Tiny K (small h) was backup and picked it up at one of our water stops

He's talking about a different ride; ours is Journey4SightnService (don't ask) in the Western Cape.

Some might wonder why we choose to talk about this on a digital platform, but I tell you this, the poor sod who throws something down in front of any of you guys!

AMEN!

I don't give a rat's arse who the person is, if it costs me access to my favourite trail, I will tell whoever to pick up their SH*T
