Used to do this many moons ago when Zambesi drive (Pretoria) was a fairly quiet road. I would cycle on the wrong side of the road to check for bricks and so forth and then slip behind a truck from the highway off-ramp up to the drive-in. Never had a scary moment but heard a horror story of one guy who swerved in behind a truck without noticing the trailer. Apparently he was lucky to be able to jump onto the trailer but the bike was toast. Not sure how true this story was. It was sometime during the late 80s.

Its all very exciting until we hear of an accident (eg. hit a pothole that you didnt/couldnt possibly see and because you are riding in the traffic lane and fall off the car/truck behind you that is "showing u so much resppect now" hits you) and then the driver gets blamed and faces charges of calpable homicide etc.

We all know the rules of the road, and if we stick to them there will be fewer fatalities.

If you want to motor pace, find a mate to drive in front of you on a quiet road... stay away from vehicles who have no clue you are behind them.

This is where I disagree. The chances of hitting an obstacle and then run over by a vehicle next to you or behind you is always there. Whether you are motorpacing or not.

been doing it for about 15 years. if done right, and precautions taken (like the OP listed) the risks is minimised (still there, but minimised).

And like was stated, stick to the left hand side. I'm always at the very left edge, almost just out of the slip.

the best is the faces of the people in the cars around you, always amazed. Better yet though is to slip a car pulling away slowly from a traffic light, and then you come past them and wave. LOVE the look on the faces.

alas right now I'm to unfit to do any of this. I tried twice the other day to slip a Clover truck on Atlas road, could no hold on for more than 100 - 200m.

another thread clearly detailing subjective risk taking.. only potholes and bricks u cant see, definitely nothing that can make u wipe out and end up being roadkill wrt following vehicle  Cant wait for a trucker to one day do this...

What was the end result? What would the fine be? Not keeping a safe following distance?

Had a cop blowing his hooter at me the other day as well. Turns out it was my neighbour. Met up with him afterwards (I was home before him :D ). We had a good chat about it.

Met up with him or his wife?
