Any photos? It'll be interesting to see where the cranks broke. I've seen hollowtech Shimanos break in the shaft of the crank where you wouldn't expect it. I've also seen the cranks break at the pedal attachment eye' date=' helped by the dynamic joint of the pedal/crank interface.

Handlebars? Aluminium?

Fork? At the steerer? Steel steerer?

no photos.

handle bars both aluminium mtb. on e was a ritchey, other no clue.

fork: steel fork, broke where the shaft is squeezed into the fork part.

cranks: 3 pairs (2x race face turbine lp mtb, suntour superbe pro road) tears close to where the pedal is inserted but no contact to the "hole", all three times on the inside, can't remember if in the front or backpart.

1 pair: f**ked up inner-square part (might be my fault though) and ja, also the recent 105 hollotech defect we discussed earlier.

frames:

rocky mountain easton mtb aluminium frame: broke at the outstays chain side, got it welded, working again for over a year since.

basso steel frame with columbus slx tubes, broke on the outstays chain side as well, got it welded only to ride straight ahead into a car dith 35 km/h - frame "folded" on the upper and lower tube, legendary rigiday dp 18 rim didn't have the slightest uneveness.

de rosa steel frame: broke where the seat tube is connected to the bottom braket frame part.

hagar, breaking that crankset was the best thing!  We went back to Geelbek to rescue our crank brother with the girls and had a great breakfast next to the lagoon.  Geelbek's chocolate cake and lemon meringue cakes are awesome and the view is the best!!!  Good thing we had that 56k ride beforehand...

Still don't know why the cranks went south, but it seems odd for a brand new bike.  Will report back on the Ultegra failure.

As for the distant family thing; you saw the size of my extended family and there is always room for one more in ou Money houseLOL

Managed to get this right last week!!!

It looks like you have a nice camera with a good macro setting there. Could you perhaps take some close-ups of that broken rail once you've taken it off the seatpost? It'll be interesting to see what went wrong there.

Sure ...will do!!

aaah, I understand why the rail broke now - you can see the clip on the back of the saddle and I presume that you use to carry a beer keg there as provsion on the rides?!  Wink

everything has its moment, also cranks. at it's time the superbe pro are regarded to be of the same quality as the durca ace components. but just much better looking (trying to avoid "pretty") here.

But yes, old but tested - that's how I love it (in regards to cycling)!

If you have components of the gruppo lying around and they can still  be used please let me know!

I have a set of wheels built with SuperbePro hubs and they're still going strong, 25 years on. It is just difficult to get 7-speed clusters.

I have a brand new SuperbePro RD lying around, if you're interested. I just don't know what sprockets you'll match it to, it only works with Suntour sprockets which are definitely extinct.

Also only a couple of spokes on the no name brand wheels that was on my RC2000 (2002 model)

Otherwise, nothing on bike or myself. (ok, 1 saddle post bolt, about 90km into a 130km ride (from Rustenburg to Carletonville), but that was due to my own stupidity, changed saddle position and overtightened it) I was paste when I finished that ride, standing until I could no more, sat on saddle all the way down until I could no more, stood up again, etc, etc.

2 forks. 1 frame.2seatpost bolts. one seatpost.bent handlebar. a bunch of rims and hains. oh and one raceface crank. that was a bad day.far from home.

But my LBS replaced it straight away, no questions asked, and its still working fine!

Hearing of other folks with the same luck as me make me feel a little less frustrated with bike parts breaking:

5 frames - fatigue failures around the BB

2 cranks - one was definately as a result of unsquare faces on mavic BB

1 chain (only because I replace them regularly - say 5000km absolute max)

2 Bars

1 Stem

1 saddle

2 Pedals (one steel axle & one ali casing both on time pedals)

6 rims (all fatigue failure around the eyelets, only one was a front rim)

1 rear hub flange (fatigue failure - again)

6 (maybe more) rear axles (all in the days pre integrated free hub mech)

Countless rear spokes, usually drive side - regardless of who builds the wheels

&

3 front spokes LOL

In crashes, I written of some more bars, stems pedal, wheels etc.

I've never broken a BB, front hub or saddle pillar that I can remember. The thought of having a saddle pillar shear while your sitting is an accident that especially scares me.Shocked
