From Club 100 newsletter this morning (I punctured in the same spot yesterday)

Bike-Jacking Alert - On the early morning Engen ride today, 3 of our club members were involved in an attempted bike jacking. They were in the process of repairing a puncture on the side of the road in Randburg (at the Braam Fischer/Jan Smuts Avenue split) when they were approached by an individual demanding their bikes. When help was called for the guy ran off only to chase another rider who was on her own. She managed to get away. Luckily the individual was unarmed. We cannot stress enough the importance of riding in big groups. In the case of a puncture or any mechanical, make sure there are at least four of you there, 2 to do the repairs and 2 to be on the lookout. This is the first report of problems in this area.

Are the details for this ride still the same?

40kms, 2 groups etc.

1 group start (anywhere from 4:55 to 5am)... but given the pace it usually breaks into 2 groups by the time we get to Jan Smuts. Same routes though.

Usually 2 groups, and some small splinter groups... leave at around 4:50 to 4:55, and then the groups break up depending on your speed. Front guys normally take anywhere between 60 to 70 minutes for the whole route, depending on the day and what race is coming up. Groups behind all depends on the pace?

Leave from the Engen on Main road, just before William Nicol

Can you please share the route via Strava?

There go my hopes of joining on my mtb....

Wednesdays are medium and Fridays easy - join on those days? There is a MTB group too which pulls off at Emmarentia on the trail.

I have a question for the guys re: Wednesday rides.

A mate of mine is trying to get into cycling & he is slightly unfit. Neither of us has done the route before & I am wondering whether it'll be a good idea if we should join. He might be able to manage a 21-22 avg.

Unless you can average above 30, you will be riding alone Or so I hear.

Be warned the bunches are tight and the speed high, it's not for the inexperienced. Buddy of mine crashed after hitting a pothole in the dark - was lucky to come away without any broken bones.
