Bike Setup - ErgoFIT vs BG FIT vs Bike Shop

I was extremely happy with my Body Geometry Fit. I would easily pay R1000+ for the result. The setup is specific to a bike, unless the other bike has exactly the same geometry, saddle, handlebars, pedals, cranks etc. The fact that Ergo-Fit does not perform an in-depth physical evaluation, was the clincher in my decision.

Huh??!! If they had done a more extensive physical exam I'd be scared to go! What do they do in the BF session then - physical eval-wise?!

I sought out The Doctor for my Ergofit. I am very pleased with the results and think it's money well spent. From my first ride I can feel the difference in my position and my pedalling rhythm. I feel better positioned over the BB and feel more comfortable in the drops and on the hoods. If you planning on buying a new bike or just a frame I would recommend it. I have now narrowed down my choices based on my current setup and what I am looking for in terms of geometry in top tube and head tube dimensions and comparing them to my current bike. All too often we make purchases based on impulse and what seems like a good deal. I guess thats why some pros have custom frames which accomodate their dimensions. I have no experience with BG Fit so cannot comment on it.

So, your seeded bunch can expect good power moves from you this Spring, eh, Super Mario?

must say having watched the BG fit guy do Owen Hani on SS I was quite impressed with the detail that went in... Can't recall the guys name - anyone been to him and / or have contact details?

Anyone? A little searching suggests it was probably here:

Can anyone confirm and advise what the guy's name is? Also, is it worth getting both the MTB and road bike done at the same time?

Ive seen three vids where they do BG fit and for some reason everyone they fitted required steps for their shoes, i find that a bit odd.

hmmm thats interesting.. For me the attention the guy gave to feet position, knee alignement etc was what interested me as I believe I need this as I have both serious over-pronation on my one foot and a leg length discrepancy - so keen for input from someone who knows what they doing rather than trying to tinker myself... But, ja I wouldn't expect the average Joe with "normal" feet and same length legs to need too much messing about their shoes...

I am not sure that bike fitting can be purely scientific. The way I have learned was that there are some general measurements that get you into the correct set up range for your personal proportions. (This was mainly helpful advice from old pros before the internet was born...) From there your comfort and personal flexibilty determined which way you tweaked and perfected this general set up. This didn't just suddenly happen. It took months of riding with that set up and playing around adjusting one element at a time until you feel what the sweet spot is for you. Overall, the ideal probably ended up being years of playing around...

A personal example which substancially altered my bike set up. Flexibilty is not a static thing. Years after having back surgery, I went to a biokineticist for rehabilitation. On my first toe touch test, my flexibilty was 10cm short of touching toes (after warming up). Through extensive stretching therapy, after a month I was pushing 24cm past my toes for the same test. Luckily I was able to adjust my bike for the increased flexibilty myself because of the way I had learned to do it before.

Just bear in mind that there are other areas of the body which become stiff which will affect your set up. Sometimes when I get on the bike and feel a little stiff I try to warm up and stretch the tense muscle. If I find the position is still causing discomfort, possibly through age, I try adjust the set up.

Another example.... because of my back op and subsequent nerve damage I sometimes find that my hips are way out of alignment - can be up to 4cm higher on one side. I'm not sure if a fitter would take all this into consideration? Or would he assume a leg lenght discrepancy...?

Another thing... I know how my road bike should be set up for me. What happens with MTBs? My XC bike has a forward position but nowhere near my road bike. The trail AM bike has to be much much more upright than that. What happens when I bring my DH bike?

I'm not trying to diss these fitting systems but to me the experience of the fitter takes precedence over whatever system is being used.

I have been to him, PM me if you would like some honest feedback.
