PPA cut cord with CSA

anyone else who agrees Argus is a bit on the expensice side? . Big walk has always been R50, so why do they need to charge R300 and even R600 for sustitution entries. Whoever must be making truckoads of money and from what I understand the city closes roads, not paid for through our entry fees, or am i missing something?

No, I disagree. I feel that the Argus enty fee is one of those amazing life bargains. For that amount of money nothing else (legal) can be so much fun.

I agree, with DGM, that the Argus is expensive, when we consider how much it costs us 'out of towners' to get there. That said, I think that if one enters early, the actual entry fee is very affordable. Anyway, this is not the point of the thread.......

Regards PPA and CSA - I cannot claim to know the inner workings of either organisation, but it does appear that besides the 'politics' of cycling, there is a lot of personal differences at play. To many bulls in the bull ring and the bulls start to fight amongst themselves, rather than to fulfil their mandate.

I must say that the CSA press release is brilliant - factual and concise

Being a Gautenger, I wish PPA would take over up here... Some people may complain about them (some people will complain about anything), but it appears they do a much better job than CGC.

Cycling South Africa Announcements – 09 February 2012

3. As mentioned with the cancellation announcement of the 2012 Tour of South Africa, the financial issues pertaining to the Tour were to be resolved after meetings with the joint Board comprising Cycling SA and Primedia. Primedia have in the meantime issued a letter requesting payment of outstanding finances. Cycling SA will be engaging with Primedia to resolve this matter.

Why do they need to "engage"? Surely if they received R2.8m for an event to be staged in 2012 and this was cancelled, they should still have the cash available?

If they don't.................liquidation????

Aaah, now I understand, I thought the funds were owed for the tour they did already stage last year, so I was a little confused.

Oh dear.!

It was obvious...

The interview was then switched to another topic...

So, what I heard was that the new Constitution for CSA will be voted on this weekend and that the PPA will not be present at the meeting...

I shudder to think about the possible bruises, broken skin, bones when a walker gets switched in a group... :o

I don't think a few million will even fill up my boot, not even contemplating a truck!

I can't believe how some people are complaining about the costs of the Argus or the setup with PPA. Seriously?!

The Argus costs about the same as a round of golf. For that price, they close off some of the most beautiful roads in the world - let me reiterate that: in the world! Practically an entire city has to make do with traffic closures. There are emergency services, refreshment stops, etc. etc. etc.

What do you get for that on a golf course? Seriously, WTF?!

Someone complained that it should be lower because it costs a lot to get there - well the price of playing at St Andrews isn't lower just because it would cost me an international flight to get there. How illogical is that - take your complaint to the airlines, not the Argus organisers.

And criticising the PPA? Jeez, guys - what more do you want? Be careful of wishing for their demise, you might just get what you want. Personally, I am more than happy with their product & service. They're doing a fantastic job and I can't imagine anyone else getting as much right for such a reasonable fee.

I think you guys need to look at this a bit more objectively and with a better understanding of the two orgs.

CSA is nothing like PPA, they are totally different in terms of their mandates, level of competence, willingness to communicate with cyclists, the list is endless. PPA is not perfect, they take a lot of flack from me included, but without them we'd really be losing out on a lot.

Bottom line is you need to work with them if you want to help cycling in the Western Cape and retain the Argus as an internationally renowned event.

Cool post!

PPA's response:

http://www.pedalpowe...a-ppa-response/

"The minutes of the Meeting of 18 February 2012 reflect that PPA has 17990 individual members, which is 53.53% of all the individual cyclists who are members of cycling organisations affiliated to CSA. The votes allocated to PPA was 15 out of 83, which is only 18%."

"Since the 2004 Constitution was adopted, the PPA has paid the following amounts to CSA, for which it has received little or no benefit:

1. Initially, when CSA did not have any funds, PPA undertook and paid for the salary of CSA’s employees for a period of two years. The amount paid to CSA in this regard totalled R551 000;

2. Calendar fees of R43 115;

3. Membership levies of R2 128 087;

4. PPA has collected and paid to CSA day license fees of R66 416."

"The 2012 Constitution voting provisions are undemocratic. It provides for one vote per member for each of the Provincial Members. This means that Northern Cape with 98 members has the same voting powers as Western Cape, having 552 members plus PPA’s 17990 members."

Summary: CSA wants all the power and money...

And now from the Joberg2C organisers:

Important news from the Old Mutual joBerg2c organisers:

CSA Licenses: We have been informed that Cycling South Africa is enforcing a day license fee of R35.00 per day if riders are not licensed already. Riders can pay R315 at registration or join CSA by the 30th March 2012 and pay only R75.00 for an annual membership.

You will also need to join a club - there are some reasonable clubs around.
