Driving to the Argus Race - be careful .....

I use the cruise control on my car whenever I hit these small towns. Nothing like doing 120km/h and then having to slow down to what feels like a crawl.

Surely they have better things to do, and should be enforcing SAFETY, and a number plate is NOT a safety violation in my mind...yes it is illegal bla bla....but what is it with these cops who always target the easy money?

Yeah, I do too, but the signage is confusing and often non existent, I dont know what distance the signs need to be apart but often you will be cruising along at 120 and suddenly its 60, no warning to slow down to 80 first, or the signs go 120-80-60 so quickly theres barely 200m between them - I dont have an issue with traffic control, but I have a HUGE issue with blatant fleecing of the motorist, they know you will never return to their dump of a town to fight the case in court, even if you are 100% in your rights to do so, so they just do as they like, and usually we just have to suck it up and pay.

I hate the dump, its dirty and depressing, there's only two gas stations worth stopping at and both are overcrowded and the service is begrudging, I never stop there, I will not spend a cent there, and on the downward trip I stop before B.W or afterwards at Leeu Gamka where the gas station owner keeps the place clean, service is good and although there is no restaurant the shop is fine, and you can get everything you need.

100% my experience as well! Always stop at Leeu Gamka - NB plus the fuel is a few cents cheaper than in BW!!!

Often you get speed reductions down to 60 when there a shop on the side of the road or some deserted outpost, and they use this as an income opportunity, and that is the focus of the law enforcement. Last year I was driving down to Sodwana on deserted back roads, pass a settlement with a speed reduction, then continue, there's a long downhill afterwards, with absolutely nothing on either side, start rolling, get pulled over for doing 104km in a 80 zone, they want to lock me up, in the end give me a fine of something like R800. I am generally a very cautious law abiding driver, really don't like taking chances, always give way, ...

Lets differentiate this to the people who drive like idiots and fools, like overtaking on a blind rise, over taking against on coming traffic assuming they will give way, changing lanes without indicating, unroadworthy/dysfunctional vehicles, the roads are full of really bad drivers etc yet 99.9% of these get away with it, their is no policing in this respect.

In Magalies they try to catch you coming into town on the R24 near Corriloch and going out of town just past Lovers Rock, but there is no sign of the pork on the Maropeng road, the R563 nor beyond Maanhaarand where bikers and cars alike fly down these roads, especially on a weekend.

Reddersburg in the Free State is another terrible place for speed trapping. Got arrested there once.

maybe it should rather read: "Reddersburg in the Free State is another terrible place for speeding".

No excuse for speeding, anywhere. Simple as that.

What would you define as speeding? Very often it is only a matter of being slightly over the speed limit and that is not speeding in my book and you get zapped by a camera. Happened with me at Van Reenen where the camera is basically placed just after the 80 km sign and I was still busy reducing speed.

So we are complaining about policing speed limits and bikes being hit by speeding cars in the same forum, every day.

Stick to the rules.

simple answer - being over the limit. And that sign suddenly jumped there out of nowhere and surprised you, I guess.

Actually a lot of people have complained that the sign on the southerly approach to the town is hidden in foilage. But try argue your way using that in that one-horse town, where the local traffic cop thinks he's god.

I thought speed limit is 60km/s an any town in South Africa, by default. No sign (excuse) needed. You know, because children tend to cross roads.

It sometimes happens that the signes are obstructed by a vehicle in front of you or as you come over a blind rise, and as mentioned earlier the spacing of speed signes are not always logically placed
