Looks like our old farmer friend is at it again. Many many punctures in the cradle yesterday, and the culprit - industrial drawing pins painted black. My wife got one in her front tyre.

Farmer boy, we going to find you and we are going to press charges when we do. Grow the ****up, you're not going to stop cyclists from riding in the one place that is supposed to be safe for cyclists to ride.

Hmmmm think I could use this to my advantage. How big are these industrial drawing pins ? would love to use something like this in the emergency lane on Beyers Naude early morning .... then again maybe not such a good idea ...

Now you guys need to ask yourself why this situation happens? 3 possibilities I can think of right now:

1) Some psycho is going around at night putting out nails for the fun of it

2) Someone seriously pissed at cyclists bad behavior

3) Someone lost a couple of black nails

Feel free to add to this list

We all know the reason, some cyclists ride like they own the road, truth is they probably drive their cars that way too. But taking measures which jeopardises the safety of all cyclists is not the way to address the problem.

We as cyclists should take issue with the guys that ride like idiots. (That is another thread in itself.)

But punctures on bicycles at high speeds are no joke, especially on a tandem, its a one way ticket to hospital or worse.

My suggestion is that if this is such a serious issue (cyclists riding inconsiderately) get the police / community involved and issue spot fines to cyclists doing stupid things like;

- riding 3 or more abreast (I say 3, becuase you can comfortably ride 2 abreast INSIDE the cycling lanes in the cradle)

- cycling in the middle of the road when there is PLENTY space in the purpose built cycling lanes. etc etc etc

+1. Made a decision not to ride there after seeing how badly cyclists behave on those roads.

When Teak was still open, we used to take our MTBs by car along this road. Apparently those cycling lanes now means "the whole road has now become yours".

It is so so so frustrating having to swerve for a bunch of them (4 or 5 abreast) NOT even using their allocated lane but now giving themselves the permission to own the whole road.

Throwing pins in the road is silly and childish, nevermind extremely dangerous at high speeds as someone mentioned, but what if you regularly travelled that road by car and have to deal with these rude cyclists on a daily basis giving you the finger for driving on their road. I can imagine their frustration.

After I came second to a Toyota Dyna about two years ago (in the emergency lane) i've become very aware of my attitude towards drivers. It has been discussed over and over again, the problem is a very 3- sided afair.

It's both our roads, but it's foolish to argue that point with a solid steel bull-bar...

Wow! At last someone's come up with a tangible solution to this nightmare!

How long has this debacle been going on?

The way it's been going, the only way it'll end is when the culprit is caught by a cyclist and has the cr@p beaten out of him, there'll be arrests and blowback! Not the best solution, is it?

I'm a biker and a cyclist, and saw the carnage between Glenburn and Kloofzicht yesterday morning. Felt very sad and have been thinking about it.

The only way to try and resolve this conflict is to try an education policy by getting a group of cyclists to give up their Sat/Sun morning rides, being on the road at the entrances to the route and talking to all cyclists for a couple of weeks. Put up some plastic awareness signs, a gazebo etc. Talk to cyclists at start points (Broadacres, outside the Caves, the T-Junction at Valverde etc)

Chat to ThinkBike Ground Team about helping out. See if Mogale Metro won't get involved for a finite period and show support in issuing warnings/fines.

Not all weekend riders are on The Hub, so a physical presence on the day is needed to create awareness of a concerted effort to fix this problem.

Use it/loseit, but I can't think of any other way to resolve this. All I do know is it's going to end badly if something isn't done.

My 2c worth.

Was also out there yesterday and was the unfortunate recipient of 3 pins in front tyre. Luckily was on MTB so not affected and managed to finish ride (only just though. Tyre went flat last 500m). Felt sorry for all the guys and gals training for IM. Alot of them were the unfortunate recipients of a pin or two. That said though, to the Peaceforce guys and gals riding 3,4,5 abreast. It is because of people like you that this asshole scatters the roads with pins and causes carnage for the rest of us.

Chat to Shaun Hannie from SignUp. Sure he will be happy to help with an initiative like this?

Anyone know him?

Would be good to get stuck into this now, at the same time as all the other cycling safety initiatives going on. Would be great to get all the local cycling clubs on board too. (Idealistic I know - but its worth giving it a go).

No it isn't, they're assholes regardless and so is he, in fact he now proves himself a bigger asshole.

No amount of irritation justifies an act that could cause a serious accident.

Yup, Tit for Tat doesn't help a lot, does it?

I see both sides of this issue. It all boils down to: Do unto others as you would have them do to you - this would solve 99% of the crap that we contend with on a daily basis in every facet of life. Simple rule, but it's often seen as outdated and Biblical. If we could get this right, we wouldn't even need rules and regulations, would we?

I nearly took the Cradle road myself yesterday morning on my bike; glad I didn't. I didn't know there was such an issue on that route.
