Hairy Posted March 28, 2012 Posted March 28, 2012 Hi All So who out there has the skill and Kahunas to organise and host a 24hr MTB event in CT during the winter season. We have the great Dirtopia 24hr in Summer, but it would be great to have another one mid year. Come on someone! Hopefully your Hairy
gummibear Posted March 28, 2012 Posted March 28, 2012 There is a 24 race in the UK in winter,so it shouldn't be to cold for Cape Town.
PhilipV Posted March 28, 2012 Posted March 28, 2012 I'll be keen to ride that. But I reckon Dirtopia thinks 9hrs are long enough in winter. Gonna be lank cold, especially if it is wet.
Hairy Posted March 28, 2012 Author Posted March 28, 2012 Really hot in summer and really cold in winter ... I don't see a problem with this
Kranswurm Posted March 28, 2012 Posted March 28, 2012 There is no reason why you cant have it early winter say June before the wet sets in
Bos Posted March 28, 2012 Posted March 28, 2012 I'd be keen if it were held somewhere that shouldnt be to wet in winter but got cold.. like Eselfontein..
'Dale Posted March 28, 2012 Posted March 28, 2012 More like... Who's got the winter gear... Has this evva been done?
Hairy Posted March 28, 2012 Author Posted March 28, 2012 What is the camping like at Eselfontein. I recall it gets really muddy on the fields. A trail with a rugby field that can drain well or a mother of a big shed or two where you can just drop your sleeping bag and "travel light" would also suffice. I don't mind taking a beating on the trail as long as there is a warm/dry place I can retreat to when off the bike
Hairy Posted March 28, 2012 Author Posted March 28, 2012 More like... Who's got the winter gear... Has this evva been done? There used to be a 24hr even in Malmesbury during winter. Was very well organised with camping on the rugby field and use of the stadium showers/facilities ..... the trail though was not the most exciting. Winter gear ... I commute to work and back in winter everyday anyway ... a rain shell and lots of layers will do the trick.

Rain shell and ride harder is more like it... just take a warm jacket for when you're off the bike. Camping in the rain is no fun though. A venue with a big shed / afdak thing for camping under would be ideal.
Tumbleweed Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 Why do you need a Hawaiian priest to do a 24-hour race? Cojones, maybe?
Hairy Posted March 29, 2012 Author Posted March 29, 2012 Why do you need a Hawaiian priest to do a 24-hour race? Cojones, maybe? In order to perform the final rights for those who don't make it
Tumbleweed Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 In order to perform the final rights for those who don't make it Hahahahahahahahaha! Yeah, them Cape winters can be rough.

I commute to work and back in winter everyday anyway ... a rain shell and lots of layers will do the trick. And yet the trail was more exciting than the 24hr events I did at Rietvlei up country. There wasn't a big climb, but that said, we still climbed over 100m on the 7km lap. The Malmesbury 24hr was held in September, and we never encountered rain - just some rather chilly evenings. This event filled a nice gap in the season - after Baviaans, but before the road season got up to speed.
