Those things caused more punctures than they stopped, the join would wear through the tube... also, no protection against sidewall cuts or pinch flats.

The other issue is that the weight weenies use super light tyres, which have thin casings and puncture easily. Not that I blame them, 1kg saved on your wheels will save a massive chunk of energy over 800km - but the tradeoff is downtime fixing flats.

Until they invent decent non-pneumatic tyres, punctures are here to stay...

yeah you get mooses for offroad bikes. basically you fill up your tyre with these balls that mimick the general pressure used etc

Aside from mooses, there's also a system called tubliss for offroad motorcycles which is showing good results. Not sure why this has not made an impression on the all mountain scene yet, cos it does not look like it would be a heavy weight penalty, but highly doubt it would be light enough for the weight weenies.

remember when some DH bikes were seen with 2 valves on opposite sides of the rim - some sort of automatic re-inflation system or something when one tube punctured??

A very interesting question! In this modern technological world and the vast back up and resources that 360Life enjoy - how can they lose 24 minutes due to repeated puntures??? Something does not add up here!
