True mountain biking does not require lycra - I have been riding with baggies for 5 years now, and no, it does not get caught in bushes etc all the time, then you can't ride. I love riding in baggies. I own 2 pairs of Fox pants, you won't go wrong with them...happy riding

Certain types of TRUE MTB does actually require lycra. Marathon and ultra marathon events are very uncomfortable and hot in anything else.

I can't imagine riding the Sabie Classic or Barberton marathon, 5:30 to 6:00 hours of sweat, in

anything else.

Sure, downhill or trail, or jumping or whatever it is you do, wear whatever you like. But to overheat your nuts because you think someone might stare or, and this is the funniest, that baggy shorts actually make some kind of fashion sense, is ludicrous.

This is where roadies have you lot beat. They just don't care. On group road rides everyone is actually too busy sweating and hurting to be ogling your package or care whether you have a booger or boner. They only care about hanging a wheel and holding the bunch.

Competitive swimmers use speedos or skin suits. Each sport has its attire which is usually driven by common sense and functionality other than fashion or modesty (golf is the notable exception!)

And Sam in his christmas green baggies actually looks silly next to Burry and co. Wear those calf length shorts if you must but don't kid yourself you look cool in them. You don't.

I have also been riding for a few years now and only with baggies. I have never had them caught on any branches/bushes or seats. Then again these are proper mtb baggies. The crotch area sits a little higher than any other shorts so it eliminates them from catching on the seat! Also I like how the baggies actually give some protection from the cold and this year should it get really cold I will be trying out some long riding pants.

I've done marathon races in my baggies, no problem. Seriously. I have no beef with the more sporty models but I like having pockets to put gum, lipice, empty wrapers etc in and after the ride/race I dont have to change. Personal prefrance I guess. I have two pairs of the First accent ones with the inner pad thing built in they are pretty comfy and dont bust the bank.

Now people can't read, I never said anything about fashion or looking cool. WTF? Why would I care if anybody looked or stared at me??????? Maybe it's something that is important to you I think.

Yes, the pro's do ride with lycra. Yes 90% of mountain bikers out there ride with lycra, so what?

I agree with Riyadh & Pieter1.

Does everyone go to work in suits?

True dat. Except I know my Lycra isn't. It wasn't designed to be.

You should come and share a district road ride some day.

See you at Sabie trying along with the other farm road riders like 360 one and co.

Or are you too busy tearing it up with Minaar and friends?

I never got used to the inners of my FA shorts, and removed it.

FuelEx , your use of True MTB implies that unless one wears baggies and rides downhill type stuff you are excluded from being REAL.

As for fashion or modesty what reason could baggies have:

Pockets? Your shirt and pack have enough.

Comfort? No way.

Body protection? Maybe but don' think so.

Wear whatever you want. Whatever makes you real is fine by me.

 You should ride more, and worry less about what people are wearing.

somehow this reminds of 26" vs. 29" so what some people have different preferences!!!!!!!!!!! No one needs to conform to the norm. This is what makes you stand out, otherwise you will just disappear into the background.

Pockets? Your shirt and pack have enough. I find it easier to put the stuff in the shorts pockets.

Comfort? No way. I have never tried bibs or lycra so I really can't compare but like I said the padding is good enough for me.

I don't know what I'm defending here, like I said I find them or think they are more usefull. It has little to do with the coolness, I have the fashion sence of a 5 year old.

Tubleweed did you check you get ones with a removable one.

But alas, I'm not that "real" yet, so I'll wear baggies for my 3" gaps :D
