Thanks V12. The links will be most appreciated. My wife is already amazed at how much better our morning coffee is tasting so I don't mind being patient. Just not being a patient. I used lavender oil. It sorted me out.

Practice will get you there,.... there is a lot of info in the FAQ's and how-to's on HB - http://www.home-barista.com/howtos.html - all worth reading in your spare time.

Lavender oil probably works as well as this stuff does... :) http://www.poopourri.com/ which you can use before being sorted out... :)

Haha. I know the feeling. I've spent hours on the thread where they discuss/show the setups they have at home.

There are a couple of those threads.... the one in the Lever forum has some ultra cool stuff too...

There is also an exception thread on modifications to the Oscar.... :) some clever stuff in that one...

I am a bit obsessive about stuff. I wake up at 2 in the morning with a plan to make the morning coffee the absolute best. Then I am up at 5:30 ready for it and it is not as I hoped. I did the whole purge thing to get the temp correct and that was good but the milk frothing was a disgrace.

Now I have asked a mate that is going to some coffee place to get me a timer. A thermometer and a measure. We will see.

Bloody coffee

Modifications to the oscar you say?

Lavender essential oil is nothing short of miraculous on burns - so is tea tree essential oil. Good luck dialling in your new machine.

Hi

Anybody know where I can get espresso shot glasses? Online or Cape Town? Ordered some off the Tribeca site, only to hear they're out until November

Try Koldserve www.coldserve.co.za - give them a call to see if they have what you need.

Practice the milk frothing.... use dish soap and water - if you can get that right, then milk is easy... PM me if you want some hands on help during the day I can mostly make a plan.

Also remember - AIR makes up the bubbles - not steam - so you have to suck the air in to the milk using the steam initially - using a milk thermometer is a complete waste of time and money - I will lend you mine if you want to try it :)

Don't know if someone mentioned this, but if you want to practice your steaming & pouring technique & don't want to waste a lot of milk.

Put a couple of drops of food colouring in a cup and add a volume of water equivalent to double or single espresso.

Add about two drops of dish washing liquid to the same volume of water as you would normally do using milk in a steaming pitcher. Go through all the motions of texturing, swirl, tap & divide before pouring the fake cappuccino.

In my opinion

Best milk to use is ICE COLD Full Cream Clover, since the fat / protein content is stabilized. Woollies Ayrshire milk is also great.

Remember steaming pitchers must also be cold.

V12 I am definitely going to take you up on your kind offer. I will pm you next week. The soap thing sounds interesting. Will give that a try.

I am moderately happy with the fall ours I am getting out of my machine but not the frothing.

The grinder is fantastic by my standards. I am waiting for the supplier to get some parts and I will then plumb my machine in.

Have had a Delonghi for a few years. Works like a dream. Does everything you are looking for and uses beans so is less expensive to run. Cost around R6000

When you plumb in, consider finding some water alarms to put in the cupboard below... so if you do have a leak, it alerts you - and a regulator on the water supply will be needed - an adjustable one with a pressure gauge - set to around 3 - 4 bar max.

I don't believe that you need water filtration and softening in Jhb for home use - your supplier may want you to go that way, but it's pretty expensive compared to a 6 monthly descale.
