PS: MTB mom - your wheels are going out of true due to a bad build and not the rims fault. those nipples need to be loctite secured to stop them from "uncrewing" under torque and torsion loads. I had the same problem - fixed by Lance at Epic bike shop.

No no no no no no!

Never, ever use threadlock compounds on your nipples/spokes. That is just a plaster for poor wheelbuilding. A good wheel's nipples never come undone because there is enough tension in the spokes. It is extremely difficult to do minor repairs in wheels with threadlock and often they simply have to be rebuilt since that's easier and cheaper than struggling against locked nipples.

And what's with the torque and torsion loads? It is one and the same thing. There should be no torsional forces inside spokes and nipples. They are in pure tension.

To be fair he did the threadlock at my request, knowing full well fine adjustments would mean warming the nipple up again to free it.

it's a bit extreme but after smashing three crest rims and having to true them up a few times I was fed up.

I have ridden epic on them since without needing to true them again.

I am aggressive as hell on my Hardtail so I need a bit more help keeping them together, especially so because I'm also near the upper limit of what weight the stans crest recommends.

Hmmmm..I must add a new item to my labour charge list: Individually heat nipples one by one, taking care not to burn the rim stickers, light the tyre or boil the sealant - R1500-00 per wheel.

The Epic is neither here nor there - the wheel just sees rotation, number of cycles and load. A wheel ridden to Milky Lane by a heavy guy experiences more stress than a 70kg person riding 900kms offroad.

Smashed rims cannot be repaired by retruing. If they're smashed, they're smashed and it has nothing to do with wheelbuilding.

Lots of people say they ride aggressively. It is meaningless to the wheel - Since strong accelleration hardly raises their tension by 5% and strong braking by just over double that, wheels take aggressive stopping and braking in their stride. Aggression is not a component that any wheelbuilder needs to factor into the design of a wheel. It is just something we endure when the customer gives us a brief. We nod sympathetically and then build standards wheels.

Your weight, and the weight limit that's specified by the rim maker also has very little...actually, nothing, to do with spokes going loose. The weight rating of a rim will determine how quickly the rim with fatigue and crack, but exceeding that will not cause the nipples to come loose.

I reiterate: There is no reason to build with locktite other than incompetence and/or ignorance.

Have to say that when I do say that it's not in reference to how hard I brake or accelerate as I do neither particularly hard. For me "aggressive" refers to what I put my bike and wheels through. Drops, jumps, gaps, hucks...and even though I bunny hop or manual most obsticals I'm not always as smooth as I'd like to be or as successful as I intended to be. Lots of people don't this. They ride around stuff or dismount - I'll simply bomb through or over.

But I get what you're saying.

...Custom built for your weight.

How does that work? Isn't that one of those moments JB was talking about where they just nod and then build the wheel anyway?

Well, Either way the arch and Flow rims are built for aggressive XC (The Flow is more of an All Mountain - DH Rim). So they should hold the weight. The Hope Pro 2 Evo Hub is one of the stronger hubs available. The 29 inch ZTR Crest wheelset is 1500 grams, which is light for a 29er, while the arch is 1700 g and the flow is 1800 g, which aren't too bad for 29inch bikes.

I get that, thanks.

What I'm getting at is that for most weights Crest, Arch and Flow will do. Surely it comes down to riding style and the bike it's going on? I don't think Hope is any "stronger" than I9's, Halo, Stans, Chris King DT240 and up, etc.

It definitely does. There's a lot less stress on the rear wheel on a Duel Suss, but I think the Crest has a rider weight limit of 85 or 90 kg. Heavier people could ride it, but one serious drop off could damage it.

Re: the Hopes, I heard they were strong hubs, they are definitely up there with the Chris Kings and those, and some people reckon that they may be slightly stronger.

I selected the hopes because that was the deal provided.
