So it looks like I might get roped into doing the SSWC. I might not have my SS ready in time so the Fuji dualy will have to do.

In terms of training I know I have to get my ass on the bike and pedal more. Would it be a good idea to just lock down a 32x16 now and keep that going for all my training rides? Makes the most sense to me.

Ride to your local pub , drink lank beer and ride home . in what ever gear you like ( at least twice a day , that should do it ) . but get rid of the shifters and derailuers otherwise you gonna get hurt !

Training is required for SSWC  ?

Yes. You have to practise getting into your race outfit in the dark , in a small tent while hungover. It takes serious training.

Serious Ath-elites these 'ubbers. Hub to win, play to win, win to win... and then life (and the party) fly past them as they suck on their genetically specific and precise post win recovery shake...

I found the perfect hill for these ath-elites to do repeats on today. Most of them should manage it with a16x32. Others with a 39x28 ;)
