Cavendish do not work at the front, but still goes for the sprint!

Quite right. All the OP needs to do is collect everyone's bank details who he sat behind and pay their salaries. Simple really. That'll make it all fair.

Seriously - if you can hang on but not work then do the right thing and don't contest the sprints or get in the way of the pace line. Have a go at pacing s few times and see where you end up. Racing is much more fun when you're part of the action rather than just making up the numbers. Maybe start in a slower group so you can get the full racing experience rather than just sucking air for 100km...

hahaha! ok, I get that we're talking about roadie etiquette here. But in comparrison to this (4X) it seems that almost anything done on a skinny bike is courteous

what's a "fun ride"?

Pardon me. From the OP's question, I inferred that he is not racing Elite/U23, in which case, every race ride he does is a fun ride.

Get over yourselves and enjoy the ride, sillies.

Hey Bob, there are racing leagues catering to the wannabe "average joe's" that make up a significant portion of riders. Further down you get the people who are riding and racing to improve their seeding. You can't decide how people enjoy the way they cycle. Some will take it seriously simply cos it's their nature with all things in their lives.

Cool, so I know what to tell those wheel sucking bastards at the back of the group when it comes down to the prize money positions they had better work or dont try and sprint.

Fair enough.

To wit, I have put more than one rider into the dirt for shouting and swearing at me for not contributing to the pace making in said average joe races.

To each their own.

Gotta remember some people only get into racing later in life and don't come through the junior ranks with decent seeding. Their only entry then is through placing well in the fun rides and moving up to the racing leagues through improved seeding and possibly in the Elites if they pick up a ride from there.

But yes to each their own.

well, I usually feel so bad that after a while I try the front. then, 20 seconds later, I feel worse cause everyone has overtaken me again cause I am too slow.

i wish everyone would do that 20sec.

Saddest is if you do your stint, maintain the pace and then everybody drops off. Tried it again a while later, and they drop off again.

Ok, if you looked VERY hard you could notice the 0.5% gradient, but that was no reason for the average speed to drop from ~33-35 to 28km/h. Decided to just sit up, ride at the front of the bunch and smell the roses

Me - I've never understood wheel suckers....sure it makes sense in elite etc where it's position over time but in the less serious categories surely time means more? If everybody added their few metres in the front the whole group would go faster making for faster times and progression into faster groups. Instead everybody fights to be the lanterne rouge, the okes at the front start sitting up, everybody starts swinging handbags at each other and everyone loses.

Hmmm - that seems to be a microcosm for the current state of affairs in SA - everybody is all "f*ck you mate - I'm okay" and everybody ends up being just a little less okay because of everyone's selfishness.

Does that smell like irony to anyone else?

You been reading the USN thread, haven't you?

I used to wheel suck when I started, I jumped up a few groups and did some time at the front when I could.

I find now that on the up hill bumps the wheel suckers seem to struggle. So if you have a few wheel suckers on your group just up the pace on the steep bits, very hard to wheel suck up hill.
