The bike was bought in 2010, it is ridden a lot, by this particular customer.

It has never had a major service since purchase, against the advise of our mechanics, past and present.

This is all I have to say about this matter. The customer has been informed every time he brought the bike in for simple little fix's, since 2010 I might add, that sooner or later this type of excessive neglect in terms of major servcing and replacement of working parts.

I challenge anyone to ride every weekend for 3 years and refuse to replace major parts, and when they completely pack up to then complain.

It would seem after discussion with other stores, every single one of them seem to have "that customer"

How come I rode my R2500 MTB hard for 5 years before needing to replace the headset?

If Spez components are so fragile that they need replacing so often, then watch out!

Id hate to own a Spez if they are indeed made of glass. :(

I ride a 2004 Fuji with a Ritchey headset. Never been serviced. Never replaced bearings. Never opened it up to clean even in 8 years.

Checked it a couple of weeks back when I had the fork's travel adjusted. Bearings smooth as butter.

Truvativ ISIS drive BB in the frame. Same thing. Suspension bushings. Rear shock. Linkages. Bearings. Rear derailleur. Hubs. Freewheel etc etc etc all still in excellent condition. Never opened. Never serviced.

How come they still work?

Look I'm not defending Ricky but he is right - every shop has "this customer" the guy who rides his/her bike till it breaks and then complains at the cost of fixing it. And as for Specialized being more "fragile" its nonsense, its all about how you look after you stuff. I rode a 2008 S-Works Epic that was 3rd hand when I got it and I rode it for 3 years before selling it on, I washed it once a week, rode it every day to and from work for a year and only replaced the drivetrain and suspension bearings/had the shock serviced when I sold it on, but the old stuff was properly knackered! I had done Sani, 24hr etc on it...Never replaced headset or anything either so its how you care for the bike...

I don't think anyone denies a bike needs to be maintained...it's the attitude that put me off him and ultimately melrose concept store. I love spez, they make great stuff, I just won't buy it from them.

You need to check your records - the bike was bought at the end of last year (Nov/Dec 2011) on sale!!!!! Its a 2010 model, but was bought NEW!! I was there!

AND he rides on average once a week on it. Twice max.

Then you have a problem, because the greater number of readers here are not yet your customer, and your attitude is not endearing your venture at all....thumbdown.gif

Just as a foot note, The comment by Rattlesnake about his fork lock out cable, I informed him at the time of him dropping his bike off that there was a possiblity that the job may not be done in his timeline as I was going on leave and the workshop was fully booked....Two sides to every story...

Mentioned this in another thread, but maybe this one will be better..

Im searching for a Spez saddle, and it goes without saying that the concept store doesnt have stock of what I want..

Anyone know of a shop in JHB with Spez saddles?

No you didn't. Maybe in your mind you did, but you didn't. And I have two witnesses to confirm this.

So you are right, 2 sides, your side and your skitzo side.
