I have a question about HongFu. There seem to be 2 sites:

http://www.hongfu-bikes.com

http://www.e-hongfu-bikes.com/

Which is the correct one?

Hongfu is on velobuild.com, a website organising group purchases (with discounts) of various frames and wheels. Some of the other distributors are on there as well, and there's plenty of information about the frames, ordering process, build photos, etc. If you are going to purchase do it through that website.

Seems to me that site has limited choice - e.g. quite a bit of HongFu's range not listed, and no mtb at all? Also seems to be a price premium compared to buying direct from HongFu themselves.

I've been reading through roadbikereview.com threads and looks like the site to use when buying direct from HongFu is http://www.e-hongfu-bikes.com and that www.hongfu-bikes.com is their corporate site where there are MOQ's for orders.

Okay, first off, I know almost nothing about road bikes. BUT I do know good service when I see it. Check out www.light-bicycle.com

They sell mtb and road frames, rims, wheelsets, etc. Their service is stellar! E-mails are answered within 24 hours and the English is quite understandable! ;)

I came across them in an extremely long thread about chinese rims on MTBR forums. Yes, I've actually read all 94 (to date) pages. Those few who did have legitimate warranty claims merely had to e-mail a picture to get replacements!

It mostly caters for group purchases, so the range is limited to what's popular. Pricing should be cheaper through velobuild but YMMV.

I guess in the end a person must decide for themselves if they want to take the leap or not. I personally will not buy something like this without knowing anything about the company. So for instance if they made frames for Giant or Trek or any known brand then chances are very high I would buy one of their unbranded frames. Or if enough mates or guys from the hub bought from them then I would too. Anybody got experience in dealing with them?

Oh dear more assumptions. A Chinese blank does not necessarily cost 20% of a local frame.

A Giant XTC 29 aluminium frame weighs as little as 90% of these Chinese carbon blanks and cost around R3 000 - 50% of your "cheap" Chinese frame.

A Giant XTC 29 carbon frame weighs a lot less than 90% of these Chinese carbon frames and costs around R9 000 - 33% more than your "cheap" Chinese frame.

And here's the thing - both frames have lifetime warranties and if something goes wrong they will replace your frame within days.

BS on replacing the frame in days - more like weeks!!!!!!

I would be very inclined to buy a frame at the prices they advertise.

But what about a carbon road wheelset from these manufacturers - that's a little bit more of a leap of faith. Anyone bought a set?
