To spark debate on an " I wonder....? " point, i posted this topic and thank you for sharing your viewpoints, i do appreciate that our vaalie visitors pay a lot more with traveling, accommodation etc and the Capetonians thank you for boosting our tourism coffers, we hope to reciprocate in due course, if they change the 94.7 route. I do hope that PPA and the cycle tour trust has been keeping on an eye on this thread. btw i've done about 7 tours IT IS worth every penny, and for my 12 year old son and his first Argus, I know it will be a memory of a lifetime. Money can't buy that !!

I would not hassle paying R300 for doing the Argus. Obviously when you have an entire family doing the race well then it does get expensive. Perhaps they could come up with a family discount structure. Coming from Joburg it costs us a lot more than a mere R300 to do the race. More like R5000.

Just thought I would mention that there are no more "vaalies" No more Transvaal you see. I realize it is a recent innovation and only happened like 18 years ago but do try to keep up guys.

Just a little joke. Dont get wound up now

My most memorable is 2008 which I did with my wife. Lap one I did on my own and the second with her. One of my best days on the bike.

What, the Argus, already? I better start doing those qualifiers then or I'll end up in X again, that was an experience. :whistling: Lads, it's the best organised cycle ride you will get in South Africa, it has been since I did my first one in um, ja, .......I think Moses was there too.

I'd like to know what they will do after you get your blue number.

The other major rides just do not have the hype, the exhibition atmosphere, excited locals and so on. Maybe one day we will be fortunate and have this in Joeys or Pretoria  with a major ride but I think they need to find a scenic / not too tough route first.

For the record, the 94.7 is tougher than the Argus so you Kaapenaars should think about supporting "our" ride too.

I'm contemplating the Argus, but.....seeing that i've only just started cycling, let me do the 94.7 first and see if i still feel up for Argus!

Bellairs was on supercycling last week, I think.

Said that the seeding process is considering a greater variety of nationwide events, rather than a few seeding events as many riders do not always get there.

Pretty cool.

Fairer.

I decided a couple of years ago that the cost of travelling (without the family) for a self indulgent weekend couldn't really be justified. That said I currently still consider the Argus a must-do. So to fix the condundrem I make sure that the trip is essentially free except for the entry fee and possibly bike transport...

To explain, I entered and booked travel this past weekend as follows:

- flight on Kulula - 35% discount thanks to vitality and balance paid with discovery miles

- accommodation @ southern sun - 50% vitality discount balance paid with discovery miles

- car rental - will be paid with ebucks or discovery miles (wasn't able to book when I tried - I think its too far in advance...)

Do it like that and its the best R300 you'll ever spend.

+1

Discovery Vitality Bonus

I have been cycling for only this year, and my first Race was the Herald early in 2012. I have just completed my entry and payment for the Argus and thank all of you for the Marketing in this regard.

I come up for the 94.7 Cycle Challenge, albeit to do a slow cruise with my retired Mom. It could seriously do with some more vibe around the route and at the Expo. Was very surprised how low key the whole event is. Everyone pitches up to ride and then go home.

Are there no trick or trials riders prepared to do a show during the expo. They seem to force the expo stands into a seriously narrow little alley whilst partitioning off the rest of the space, instead of opening the whole area up so that people can actually browse through the vendors.

The organisers could award a prize to the refreshment station that has the most vibe based on cyclists' feedback when they get to the finish and pick up their meda with a simple question and taking note of the answer, This should up the gees.

well worth doing at least once (no matter what yr cycling experience is)

yr experience of the race unfortunately depends pretty much on the weather

but if the wind stuff's it up, its a good enough excuse to go back and do it again.

unfortunately the enjoyment of the scenic route is directly equal to how much you trained

too little, and you will probably not enjoy the scenery as much

enough - the race will be over so quickly , you won't even notice the scenery either

but nothing beats the feeling of going over Suikerbossie feeling like a million dollars and knowing its downhill to the finish :whistling:
