New starting point for riding Breedt's Nek

Out of interest - how do most of you ride when you do Breedt's? When we get to the shebeen we continue up to the tar road, turn right and then take the first left onto a dirt road. We carry over the two climbs and down the other side until you eventually get to a T-junction with another tar road (42km from the start) Then we just u-turn for a 84k ride.

It would be nice to turn it into a bit of a loop rather than a straight out and back ride.

we did that loop on saturday - its tough!

Normally just to shebeen and back

Safe enough to train alone? I know it's not the best idea but for me it might be the only option.

I don't think you'll get hijacked or anything like that, but it gets really hot out there and the chance of a mechanical (puncture, sidewall slash etc) is pretty good. i think you could get into a bit of strife in that way.

On the plus side, there's almost always some idiots out there training.

yea for sure...just watch out for some of the farmers in their cruiser 79's doing a 100 and plenty on that road. Otherwise safe...for some longer rides you can go from VG to breedts..its a big day though so pack solid food and alot of water.

I will say so. I have only been there twice and I will say there are enough cyclist on the route at one single time to go alone.

Just don't go mad down the hills and fall and hurt yourself without anyone knowing where you are.

Saw a lady riding alone on Sunday, I wouldn't advise it! I was warned once by a farmer passing by about riding alone as he believed it wasn't safe!!!

Come join out group rides Sir M!

It's about 20km down the tar road from VG - just keep heading west on the road to hekpoort one you arrive at VG. Just after a garage on your RHS is where most people start. To explain how to ride to get to the climb is a bit more difficult. My suggestion is to get to the starting point and then simply tag along with someone on the ride. Its pretty straightforward.

What makes it appealing is the length of the climb (especially at the back) there's not much of that type of MTB climbing in Gauteng.

Oh my dearest MtbBarbie, I am neither fit nor strong enough to keep up with your group. :D

Thanks for the feedback. I believe that if the farmers in the area are saying to be alert then it's not a bad idea to be in a group.
