Did they replace or service the wheel bearings? If so maybe some greasy fingers got onto the discs and is now on the pads?

they didn't replace the bearings, but I can hear they are getting quite noisy again..which can only mean one thing..time to replace AGAIN..so maybe they touched it and saw it had to be replaced but didn't say anything....

so the bike shop reckons they haven't touched the brakes or the brake pads.....??? weird as I had perfectly working brakes and now nothing....and this on TWO bikes

INSANE

full service and they claim they did not touch the brakes??? One would expect them to check the brake pads when doing a full service! dodge if you ask me

Insane i agree

So many questions....

What does a "full service" entail, how much did it cost and did they give a break down of what work they did?

What exactly does nothing mean, you need to draw a picture (explain it in more detail). If before service = 100%, how much percent are they now, 0%?

Do the brake pads move towards the disk when u pull the brake lever

Does the wheel still turn if you lift, spin it and then pull the brake lever, can you still turn the wheel with the brakes applied (wheel still held off the ground)

When pulling the brake levers do they feel the same as before the service or do they travel further towards the handle bars / hit the handle bar

How did u transport the bikes home, both wheels on or off?

Did you take both bikes for a ride yet, and see if the brakes dont improve after a few hard breaking attempts.....incase they really are stuffed dont try this on a steep hill or traveling towards something solid and bigger than you

All this talk of not touching things like pads and discs and then the brakes suddenly not working "nothing" ....disc brakes are not some sort of highly sensitive holy grail that will fail as soon as some grease monkey touches them.

We first need to find out if nothing = 0%

have done two two hour rides now and still no braking power. pull the lever in completely and the bike will still not come to a complete stop. so now tell me...they didn't work on the brakes....I paid for a full service and the bike is worse off than when I took it in.

we "transport" the bikes by taking off the front wheels...have done this a million times, so this is seriously not the problem

My un-educated guess is that the pads are contaminated. New pads and a cleaning of the rotor should sort it out.

Someone prob was a little over-exited with the lube/polish.

Most bike shops wont touch the brakes unless you specifically ask for it so thats why Im guessing is contamination.

Take it back to them - stand by as they clean the rotor and replace the pads - test the bike. If that sorts out the problem - tell them they can sort out the invoice internally. Remember to smile and wave as you leave.

SwissVan do you reccomend a few attempts at hard breaking after a service to get thing "sitting nicely" even if its not necessary to stop with that amount of force?

Depends what was done at the service, if the pads and discs were not touched then it should not be neccesarry. If something was changed then it will probably be neccesarry, but normal riding will also eventualy have the same effect.

Your first ride after the service will tell you if it needs to be done i.e. the brakes will either work like normal / intended or they will feel less effecient.

By hard breaking I mean coming to an almost complete stop from a high speed without locking the wheel, repeated until the brakes have their normal "bite" back again.

Would hate to think how the Epic and other multi day stage riders who change their pads/disks cope with this.

Does the breaking improve if you "pump" the breaks a few times in sucsession i.e. pul release pull prelease pull release the brake lever.

If the breaking has not improved after 4 hrs of riding then that would suggest that something other than brake fluid is taking up space in the system, and it needs to be chased out i.e. replace brake fluid and bleed properly.

TBH the only way you gonna sort this out is to either take it back to them, the sooner the better.

Explain nicely and dont be nasty to them (try avoid saying "ever since you worked on it" to often....rather try something like "on my first ride I noticed the brake performance was less than before, and even after riding a few times it has not improved), Hopefully they will fix it at no extra cost.

Or take it to someone else but be prepared to pay for the fix.

Thats exactly the point, the brakes will still work but not quite as sharp, but after a few good brake applications will feel normal again, even if the grease monkey left his fingerprints on them....
