An durbanites know where i can take my Amp for an overhaul....we have had some construction work done recently and my amp has been pretty much packed away for about 6 months...fired it up the other night and a sliver of smoke came out (i literally fired it up!)...quickly turned it off..opened it up and inspected...and noticed that there are a whole heap of capacitors etc that are in dire need of replacement...anyway gave it a blow and put it back together and it was fine again..but it is noticeably battling to amplify now....I could go and get myself a new one because it is now almost 30 years old...but....its been part of me for most of my life and if I can fix it then I will...its a NAD 3020i

Nor analogue. It's a signal, nothing more. The speaker makes the ultimate difference.

There is on analogue cabling, it is however much much much smaller, so I agree that the biggest THD is within the speaker itself.

What gets me is when a sales"person" tries to sell me a R5k HDMI cable because it offers better visual performance, but the sales"person" cannot explain why though....

The science disagrees with you :)

There is a measureable loss of signal over analogue cabling, simple because there is resistance in the cable, or am I wrong?

True to an extent, but not nearly to the extent that they want you to believe.

EDIT: Essentially, all you need to know is the thickness of cable required to carry the signal, and many high end cables have a higher effective resistance than cheap ass cabling.

  • Over very long lengths, cables can affect audio quality if the gauge of the wire is insufficient. Thin speaker cable at lengths of maybe 50 feet (15 meters for those living in the 19th century or later) or more will show a noticeable drop in quality.[34] Similarly digital cable over very long lengths will show noticeable signal degradation. However these are issues that could only really affect very large venues such as stadiums and concert halls where industrial grade (and relatively cheap) cable is used. This is the grain of truth that is heavily manipulated to sell very expensive cable to the monetarily overburdened.
