Switching to roadbike any makes and models recomended?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I am new to the cycle seen.

Cycling on my own, on the road only. Every weekend on a MTB for the last 5 months.

Doing a lot of spinning and cardio for the last 2 years and have decided to tests myself and have some outdoor fun.

Did a 44km fun ride over the weekend and was pretty impressed how I cycled and this made me think, perhaps to switch to a road bike.

I currently make use of a MTB with semi slicks.

Budget 15-24k for a complete bike: No specific brand so far thus open for any sugggestions.

Please let me know if you could recommend any specific bike.

I am in the Somerset West region.

PS: Currently 5kg over weight and not planning to make it up on the bike's weight.

Added: Why Roadbike? MTB (Tubeless) was fun but was training to get fit on the road thus moved to slicks on the MTB. Will still keep the MTB back to tubless. Need something for Saterdays.

Look for some deals of new bikes that are last years spec. You get your best value in this zone overall, unless someone is doing a clearout. Other option is in the classifieds here. Some awesome deals come by in that price range from time to time as people upgrade. You can get a whole lot of bike for that kind of spend.

If that was my budget I would look to get the best possible frame and wheelset option out of the offers available and look for next tier bits in the groupset and other pieces,

Or you could do something like get a Scott CR1 for under that budget and buy some nice carbon race wheels for the difference.

Good luck hunting!

Whatever you do, don't get caught up in any hype. Modern carbon frames in your price bracket, are all going to give very similar levels of performance, weight, comfort etc.

You have a really decent budget, so the options are plentiful. I have several brands that I 'connect' with, and others that I'm just not crazy about, but I would be a fool to suggest that one is truly better than the other.

Go have a look at several bike shops, and settle on the one that you really like the look of (yes colour etc. is important, you've got to ride the thing for a couple years, so get something you really dig)

I personally feel that you shouldn't spend much more then your lower limit on a bike. Save the rest for a really nice set of lighter wheels (in general, the stock wheels in that price range aren't great).

Scott road bikes are really good value - have a look at the Speedster range. You can get an alloy frame with carbon fork and ultegra groupo for around R16K if I'm not mistaken. Since this is well inside your budget range, you can then negotiate with the bike shop to upgrade the wheelset before it leaves the shop.

Scott bikes

<--- for a road bike look no further! 'Dale has spoken wise words.

Then again, as somebody who's done way way way more mtb'ing than road biking all of the sudden this year.... :whistling: Wil6 also spoke very wise words...

Sooo: why not get the CAAD10 and some real mtb tyres and enjoy the best of both worlds.

Get the Dale. Carbon or alloy? Up to you but the CAAD is very light, almost as light as the six. With a set of AC aero wheels and force gruppo I builtint to 7.5 kg with pedals, cages and garmin. It's stiffer and nearly a kilo lighter than my carbon Raleigh.

All good bikes you have listed, get the prettiest one, life's too short to ride an ugly bike!

CAAD10. Wish I had one. The frame weighs less than a Pinarello Dogma by a gram or 2.

Stock wheels on the Caad10 you posted are bottom end, though. Ive got a set and they are not nice, weigh in over 2kgs, which is more than my mtb wheels! Perhaps you could negotiate a wheel upgrade with the shop for Ultegra or Dura Ace wheels.
