There is so much stuff out there on the market, that it just confuses me more and more.

Apart from training rides, on race events more than two hours what do the hubbers consume to recover and replace lost proteins and nutrients. And when should it be taken.

I know alot of you guys are gonna say lots and lots of beer and boerie rolls, but can we keep it a bit serious.

I am not trying to lose weight, I want to maintain my weight and build and strengthen my muscles.

Two weekends ago? After 170km I stopped at Something Country, had a chicken mayo type sarmie, rode 20km to home, had some milk etc. Week after this I did my biggest training week ever(480km) after one rest day.

This weekend Saturday(part of my big training week)? 150km ride: Recovery 'mix' = 3 glasses of milk + much of cheese. Oh, and 20km before the finish I stopped at Toadbury Hall and had a quick something light. All I was, was tired for my 120km ride on Sunday.

Shakes? why?

Shakes is only a supplementary or a replacement for whatever you don't eat.

If I'm not mistaken some good protein after a ride helps a heck of a lot, and as long as you nourish yourself properly during a ride you won't have an "empty tank" after your ride.

I use shakes for two reasons:

1) They allow me to have productive afternoons - without them I'm pretty useless for the rest of the day. They also help on intense weeks of training.

2) Convenience - after a hard work out or race just add water and VOILA - recovery taken care of.

I've tried both ends of the spectrum (super ultra uber multi syllabilled protein shakes as well as plain old chocolcate milk) and have settled on USN Whey Protein as my best bang for buck recovery drink.

Works for me.

Oh - on stage racing they're are not optional!!!!!

Protein shake daily, 15h00.

Recovery shake, within 30min after +3hr ride.

What is the reasoning behind a daily, scheduled protein shake? Are you a vegetarian? I'm sure powered protein is more expensive than the real thing, so I doubt it has anything to do with affordability!

So basically its mainly marketing crap.I do eat well and drink alot of chocolate milk, but lets say I do a stage race surely you have to take in something specialised

Do you take anything with a recovery shake? Or only the shake and then when the hunger kicks in, have 8 hamburgers?

I recently got myself the 32Gi Recover, took a shake after a 3hr ride...

Only if YOU need it. If you feel you do not recover properly, and in time for the next day and you diet is otherwise fine and optimal and did not fall for the marketing BS from a lot of companies - sure give it a go, otherwise it will just burn a hole in your pocket!

Yes (to the marketing question).

Stage race, depends how far into the red you are.

Take a Tour de France rider, he is depleting his body so much on each stage that he is always in deficit, hence the rampant doping and additional supplements at that level.

Take someone that rode at Mankele over this last weekend, real food is more than sufficient.

I can afford it, and it takes away the desire to have a chocolate, or chips, or some other unhealthy snack (keeps me filled till supper time).

Oh, and it is good for me

Your toasted sarmie and light bevvie would cost as much, I think it is the intensity and not the km's done that require a more scientific approach. Maybe it is marketing and maybe it is the placebo effect but sticking to the point of the thread, within 30 - 45 mins is optimal.
