Maybe a bit off topic but I just could not resist -

"surely if the Hub is anything to go by they..."

Seriously? The place where everybody slower than you is an a-hole, everybody faster than you is an a-hole, everybody who rides 26" is an a-hole, everybody who rides 29" is an a-hole, everybody who likes Armstrong is an a-hole, everybody who hates Armstrong is an a-hole? And there is really somebody out there who would consider this a measuring stick for what?

Oh and Phil is my man.

Unless your opinion falls in with the pack mentality you will be a target. Never used to be like this but has evolved to this point, i'm thick skinned so shrug it off.

I don't have a problem with Phil.He and Paul form a good team especially at the TdF.

I like their commentary.

I have also met Phil personally and he is highly entertaining and knows a lot about the sport of cycling as well as other subjects. His wife is gorgeous and they are a great couple.

He has a place in Gordons Bay and enjoys a pint at the Victorian Slimes in Fish Hoek.Phil is extremely supportive of South Africa and specifically South African Cycling which is great.

Find someone else to bash........ai...the Hub.......

PnP or just the daily live coverage with some great scenery and a guide book of the significant historical landmarks?

Probably a bit of both but on a sliding scale depending on how familiar a viewer is with their cliches. Commentary fine for newer fans, tedious for those who have heard it all before and best to view it as a travel channel show with some good early remarks and post stage comments by Matt Keanan (yes I am a fan).

All opinions aside, it is a great visual event and how else would my 3 year old daughter have learnt to shout out Tommy Voekler or Peter Sagan's name every time she sees a rider in Europe Car or Cannondale kit respectively.

I am with Kransie Here. I enjoy Phil's commentary. In fact, I turn off the sound when those pricks from Europe is commentating!!

Like someone's signature here on TheHub says," someone on the internet hates me!", wippy friken dooo!

The TDF would be somewhat strange without Phil. I like him, just not his infatuation with Pricko, sorry, i mean Wanko, sorry, i mean Wiggo

Precisely. We'll have to invent a whole new drinking game with no phill/wanko combo. (hic)

I dont think so.

Opinion on Phil seems evenly split.

To me it seems obvious that he's lost a lot of credibility and is also way past his best.

Doesnt mean he wasnt great before.

Looks like TV is very slow to change commentators as "so-and-so is the voice of....." whatever sport it is. Theres a lot of emotion and association from the viewers with particular folk, separate to the quality of what the commentator is putting out.

Murray Walker would be the prime example and Phil is getting there.
