Then its true what the financial guys are saying: soon there won't be a middle class. Only very rich and very poor.

The very rich will buy the new Scott 650b's and drink blue lable with appletizer after their ride

there's a range to both, and maintenance costs for golf are zip so it's not a straight comparison.

if you only had a grand, you could get further with cycling.

if you golf/ride twice a month, cycling will be more expensive.

if you golf/ride six times a week, cycling would be cheaper

That woud depend if you took part in another hub fred: how often do you drink during the week?

It's obvious that the running costs of a MTB is pretty steep...

Dunno how you MTBers keep up with those repairs and service costs..

Being a roadie, the costs are closer to 'reality' (as the OP calls it).

Then again - live the dream, eksê!!!

Cycling as a sport is very expensive. I bought my first bike in 2007 a mongoose rockadil, It was just after grade 7 tour and had taken me a few months to save up for R2500.00 was like whoa. Then came the helmet, pants, cleats, shirts, shoes, heart rate monitor... Constant upgrading of parts and then every 3500km its replacing the drive chain and that can kill your pocket!

But I love my sport so its worth every cent!thumbup1.gif clap.gif wub.png

I found with Mountain Biking, to Clean the gears atleast once a week and using a Teflon based lube before every ride helps. Also when you go into a bicycle shop and they check your chain and show its 75% warn and your gears are too, Ride the bike till its completely worn! Brake pads last forever just try not get them too wet, that eats them like crazy.

The ongoing maintenance costs of MTB was one of the things that prompted my initial foray into SS. I can now replace my entire drivetrain for the price of an XT cassette and it will easily last 3 times the mileage of the average 10 speed drivetrain.
