Thoughts on Microsoft Windows 8 Operating System

There are 3rd party tool that bring the start menu back for those that seriously miss it.

I am dying to upgrade, but as a developer it means having to reinstall 3 versions of visual studio, 2 versions of SQL server and various other applications. Means at least 2 days of not being fully functional at work.

Will definitely do it over the Xmas period when things are quiet.

i have slowly over time been moving to portable apps and i think msoffice, visual studio and msssql are the only things left that require an install

Will wait for the service packs or 2nd release so that all the bugs have been seen to before installing. Happy with W7 on my pc and XP on my laptop.

You don't have to re-install anything. I upgraded from Win7, all of my desktop software continues to work with no re-installation (that includes VS2008, VS2010, VS2012 and mulitple versions of SQL Server). I did this mid-project as well and didn't miss a beat. Smoothest upgrade I've ever done.

Linux users? Why would we be interested in the latest mutation of a legacy OS?

Interesting how a new VersIon of windows Is called legacy but a new version of linux or mac is called break through.....anyway I use both and I can assure you my latest mInt maya is not perfect and has crashed a few times. People really need to realise that since wIn 7 windows is a very reliable stable os

If you have purchased Windows 7 lately, visit the under-mentioned link to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for R125.00

I went through this method.... cost me R135.... yeah, they whacked a nice bumper onto the exchange rate.

Installing it on a virtual machine for now whistling.gif while I am busy with my exams so that I don't spend a whole day transferring documents and settings and installing updates.

A new version of any OS is at least a minor ballache. Personally from my perspective, a new version of Windows is just another handbrake for the internet and a new black hole to shovel productivity into. I'm thinking specifically of IE, Outlook and Word. Will this bloatware never die? Not that I use it, but as someone coding and designing for the web, the testing cycle demands that I spend a whole lot of time pressing control F5 and headbutting monitors. M$, wasting my time since 1999. Thanks Bill.

You have really got me confused with that statement...oh you edited it. I am by no means A windows fan...but I really battled to find anything better than the latest outlook and I have tried then all. Word is annoying but excel Is excellent....and Ie....well I have not used that since 1999....and we program for it as second priority after chrome and Ff

Outlook is the biggest handbrake of all in terms of raw out-of-dateness. HTML email is actually still stuck in the '90s and it's almost 100% due to Outlook and the decisions M$ have made around using the Word rendering engine.
