What old DG did is like white collar crime in the workplace. Perhaps it should be referred to as "bib short crime"? I hope for his family's sake he is either a trust fund kid, has a rich wife or has a nest egg stashed somewhere in a tax haven. I can't imagine his family can survive on his previous winnings, sponsorships and Nedbank retainer.

or he can get a job like most of us and do a honest days' work

Isn't there some almost familial connection between the sponsor and David? I heard his ex-fiancee's father set it up. Could be wrong. Also heard that he and his missus are expecting a child soon.

ja , this has also been in the back of my mind. didn't he win/ride in the Giro d Capo sponsored by nedbank with a team set up by him. he rode as an indiviually sponsored rider in the last few years on the "road" was always in the rsa team to langkwawi. never taken up by a local pro team. i wonder why.

another question : do the local multi stage mtb rides have doping control and are they sanctioned by csa.

The Epic is UCI-sanctioned.

I think David was untouchable by pro teams after the "yuppie flu" incident.

Define quite a few?

Cross contamination in manufacturer is a danger any supplement brand has at the moment.

Anyhow, I've yet to hear of any supplement brand, medicine or foodstuffs that could possibly be tainted by EPO.

I agree that contamination is a danger, but if it is, should pros risk it?

This is just one example where "few" is five, but I'm sure there's more. I guess most are never caught.

http://www.sportingintelligence.com/2011/05/02/exposed-the-contaminated-supplements-including-diet-pills-implicated-in-multiple-drug-test-bans/

An investigation by Sportingintelligence has found that at least five professional sportsmen have failed drugs tests – and in three cases been banned – after taking supplements, including diet pills, marketed by the same company that has issued private product recalls because they know some of their products have been contaminated with a banned substance.

Thanks for that!

I would imagine that he was quite clever with the cash he earned overseas. Obviously not as well as Hunter has done, and I doubt it is enough to keep him going.

Personally, I would find it quite hard to offer him a job. Especially one which requires a certain measure of responsibility.

Perhaps he'll become a Nutrition rep? Or sell spares at the LBS.

Question. I havent been paying attention today to the thread so apologise if this has been answered.

I'm not condoning what he did, under no circumstances, it's shameless/disgrace.

But

Why are they / EPIC race owner/organiser looking/talking to lawyers about DG's Epic race.

He was found to have drugged out of race conditions, and he confessed to being positive, out of race!

I'd think they can only consider going after any medals or money if they can proof he competed in said race/event and was positive at that time.

He can easily say he took the EPO the day before the test, and was caught, end of story... but ye also now end of his career.

Vermaak is full of crap on this. He has no recourse. I'm sure David would've been tested during the Epic.

Agree, dont agree with this Cape Epic official statement story.

I think the odds of KE not knowing is very slim, these guys spend 5hrs+ a day together.

Then you have to ask how clean is he then?

Following the above presumption, you have to ask, how clean are the guys that beat them convincingly in the last Epic? (Not taking punctures into consideration, they haven't found a drug to combat those yet)

This is just my opinion, but as far as pro cyclists go, you are guilty until proved innocent
